Germany has a strange way of viewing things: The country that supplies them with cheap gas (i.e Russia), they call an enemy. The country that's their biggest trade partner (i.e China), they call a threat. The country that blew up their gas pipeline (i.e USA), they call a friend.

Not just NATO, not just Ukraine and Georgia. A lot more. We walked all over the Russians when they were down in the 1990s; basically taking over the country and looting it. We refused to welcome them into the geopolitical West; instead choosing to keep them out even when there was no dispute with them. We attacked Serbia multiple times in the 1990s. We carried out many color revolutions (Serbia 2000, Georgia 2003, Ukraine 2004, 2014, Kyrgyztan 2005, Belarus 2006, Azerbaijan 2005). We armed and trained the Ukrainian armed forces. Then we rejected Putin’s ultimatum demanding Ukranian neutrality. The road to the Russo-Western confrontation has been long and winding. The only reason it took so long for Moscow to throw down the gauntlet was because it was busy building up its strength. Russia is now stronger than it has been since the Soviet capitulation. They have outgunned the West. Now they finish the job in Ukraine, then take the Baltics, and then retake their position at the head of the European table. There is a reason why Russia was the dominant European power for decades after Napoleon, why the British were so intent on the Entente, why it was the Russians who defeated Hitler’s armies, and why Russia was the dominant power in Eurasia for a good half century thereafter. The reason has to do with the deep intrinsic sources of Russian power, it’s central geopolitical position, and the imperial political culture that is responsible for Russia’s willingness to take on the entire geopolitical West. Russia is the leader of the global insurgency against the West. When the West is defeated, the author of that defeat will be above all Moscow. The West’s geopolitical error was to read temporary Russian weakness in the 1990s as a permanent state of affairs. It was incorrect even in 1994, as was pointed out already back then by no less an authority than Kennan himself. Instead, we listened to a Polish immigrant with an axe to grind.
Can we just admit that George W Bush made a huge mistake in pushing NATO expansion to Ukraine and Georgia? I don’t wanna argue over what was or was not promised. Just that…yeah bad call. Putin made a bad call invading in 2022. We made a bad call provoking him to it. And if WWIII breaks out, we will all be paying for our sins in hell.

I used to supervise Euroclear and Clearstream so this @FT story caught my attention. @MESandbu suggests Euroclear is too big to destabilise and Belgium is to small to bear the risks of $360 billion restoration costs if ever the Central Bank of the Russian Federation succeeds in regaining rights to frozen or expropriated assets - which it will regain in any settlement of the Ukraine war. What he fails to address entirely is Rule of Law and Private Property Rights. Sure these are inconvenient to thieves, but they are essential to global securities markets. Securities are called securities because they convey secure property interests and claims to their owners at law. What will destabilise Euroclear is global perception that $44 TRILLION in securities assets under custody are now UNSAFE because the EU can decide to steal them. Also, it’s irritating to see him suggest ECB can force Euroclear ‘to split off the risky part of its balance sheet into a separate entity’. That is just another form of theft. Euroclear is licensed as a bank, but its core business in its charter and under specific Belgian legislation is as a fiduciary or trustee of OTHER PEOPLES’ ASSETS. Because it is so central to European and global markets, it is forbidden to take normal commercial risks. Fiduciary, custodian, and trust assets under Euroclear custody are NOT on Euroclear’s balance sheet because 100% ownership remains with the depositors. Even if Euroclear goes bust, customer assets will NOT form any part of the insolvency estate and can be reclaimed by depositors. I designed and modernised the laws protecting Euroclear and Clearstream depositors. I pray they withstand these lawless attacks by would-be thieves. Break Rule of Law and Property Rights and you break global securities markets.

“The war is not meant to be won, it is meant to be continuous.” — George Orwell, 1984 Defense contractors & their powerful lobby will never be satisfied with simply aiding the U.S. in building a strong military that is prepared for war. The nature of the industry’s existence is not patriotism, but endless conflict. War is their business model—a perpetual state of war ensures a perpetual demand for their products. Until we address this issue, we will continue to be subjected to forever wars that only serve the defense contractors—and the warmongering interests wealthy enough to rent the defense contractors. Stop spilling American blood for profit.
Asked about the Iran War's effect on defense stocks, Lockheed Martin CEO says: "Investors need to know and understand that this demand is not fleeting — it's permanent."

Avevo ragione io.

1. US starts war in Ukraine. 2. US tells EU to ban Russian energy. 3. US breaks all other energy supply chains. 4. US tells EU to buy energy at inflated price from US. 5. US gets that energy cheap from Russia to sell to EU at huge profit. That's literally what has happened.

Let's talk about this New York Times headline, and what it reveals about bias, propaganda, and how corporate media cue you to get outraged about some violence and ignore others 🇺🇦🇵🇸 1) Let's start with the title: "Trapped in a Kill Zone, a Ukrainian City is Beginning to Starve". Check the incredibly emotive language. Barbaric Russia has turned an entire city into a "kill zone". I checked the archive, and the NY Times has NEVER described Gaza as a "kill zone," despite the numbers of slain there dwarfing Oleshky. In summary, the language spurs the reader to get outraged. "Something must be done about this" is the clear implication. 2) "Russian-occupied Oleshky" -- this is an accurate phrase, but telling nonetheless. Want to guess how many times the New York Times has used the phrase "Israeli-occupied Gaza" to describe the situation there? Zero. In fact, you have to go back to 1993 to see that phrase appear in the New York Times -- before most people reading this were probably born. Ask yourself why that is. How can the newspaper of record go 30+ years without using such a matter-of-fact phrase, while using it virtually daily when it comes to Russia 🇷🇺 and Ukraine 🇺🇦. 3) "Menaced" -- Again with the emotive language. I checked the New York Times archive database, and could find zero examples in the past 50 years of the Times using the word "menace" to describe what Israel is doing to Palestine, Lebanon, or any of its other neighbors. But Iran and Hamas? They were regularly described as not only a menace to Israel, but often the world. These things don't happen by accident, and they reveal the deep structural and ideological biases at play in media, even in something as short as a headline and subheadline. There is an enormous amount of information, views, and propaganda encoded in just a few words -- propaganda that you will unwittingly swallow unless you are critically assessing everything you read, see, and hear. 4) Finally, I have to comment on the image used to illustrate the article. The Azovstal Defenders were largely made up of men from the Azov Battalion, a Neo-Nazi paramilitary group that has been subsumed into the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In the years before the 2022 invasion, the New York Times accurately described them as Nazis, but that quibble has now been put to the side. 5) This is not meant to be an anti-Ukraine post, claiming they receive special treatment. I'm merely trying to highlight how corporate media frame certain wars, presenting certain invasions as outrageous war crimes, while sanitizing and tacitly supporting others. The key is to educate yourself in critical media literacy so you can see through the propaganda and make your own, informed judgements. See groups like @ProjectCensored and others for resources on media literacy.
