A huge congrats to Tatlock Lauten who successfully defended his thesis today! He has been an amazing asset to lab and has uncovered some really cool translational findings regarding the brain-immune axis! @TAMU @TAMUmedicine @tamuresearch @TAMUGradSchool
I have a PhD in Free Radical and Radiation Biology from Iowa. Sad that the degree will no longer be offered and just rolled into "biomedical sciences". It is something that makes me unique and interesting to employers. Sad day.

New preprint alert!
We previously found that the nervous system leads to a specific form of inflammation from T-cells. In this new work, we translate this to autoimmune disease and show promise for this therapeutic approach!

Hemoglobin continues to pop up everywhere! Time to stop thinking it is simply a red blood cell protein. Our new review is out and authored by the amazing graduate student, Emily Reed, and an ambitious high school student, Jacob Kim! @TAMU @TAMUmedicine

I bet you do not think about hemoglobin very much, other than that protein that carries oxygen in red blood cells, right? Well, we have identified that this protein is expressed in immune cells, particularly T-lymphocytes...
sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
Not only is it expressed, but it appears to play a major role in regulating inflammation, mitochondrial function, and reactive oxygen species in these cells!

Accepted! Our new work suggests adrenergic signaling regulates T-lymphocyte pro- and anti-inflammation. Exciting translational projects in the work for PTSD and other inflammatory diseases! Stay tuned!

HUGE Congrats to the newest PhD Candidate in the Case Lab... Tamara Natour! Kicked total butt on her prelims, and I am stoked to see how her incredibly translational project turns out!!! @TAMU @TAMUmedicine @TAMUHealth @TAMUGradSchool
We are taught that hemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells that carries oxygen. While true, research has discovered hemoglobin in a host of other cells. In our new preprint, we describe the discovery of hemoglobin in T-lymphocytes...

This has been an amazing and challenging journey by the superstar graduate student in the lab Emily Reed. Discovering something new is never easy, but she has persevered through the rough parts like a true professional!
We also want to thank @conn_pann_fun for his insight and use of his hemoglobin knock-out mice! His lab pioneered the discovery of hemoglobin as a nitric oxide regulator in the vasculature. Our work extends that amazing finding and shows the versatility of this ancient protein!
Our department of medical physiology is hiring! We have a new Chair and our group is growing exponentially! If you know anyone interested in physiology looking for a faculty position, have them reach out to me or apply here: apply.interfolio.com/152287
Honest question: Are there any real scientists on Twitter anymore? Used to come here to get the latest papers, but now it seems more like a cesspool of anti-science rhetoric. Where did y'all go, and can I come along? 😄
Both Emily and Tatlock nailed their poster blitz talks at #PNIRS2024. Two minutes to present your work and promo your poster... and they rocked it! Super proud mentor day 😁
