Finally found the response to this in my magazine on castles:
A place not only of great strength, but extraordinary delight, with most pleasant walks
Ladies if a man is in shape, handsome, faithful, at least 6ft, makes over $250k a yr with at least solid career trajectory, knows he wants a family and is willing to commit and is generous with his earnings, what can he expect to get from you?
This severely underestimates the experiential harm of being in a bad school
I guess my hottest take about the whole thing is that it’s fine — maybe even good — for a kid to deal with not everything being a perfectly curated experience with his exact needs in mind. A lot of life is like this.

I consider myself rationalist-adjacent. I mean sure, I've been reading LW since 2011, and sure I've hosted Aella and Scott Alexander in my house (separately), and I suppose I've run some Secular Solstices, and technically some things that I've written have made their way into other Secular Solstices over the years, and who among us hasn't started an HPMOR subreddit, and I guess I did sign up for cryonics, and it's true that I've donated to MIRI and Lightcone Infrastructure, and I'll confess that I've purchased things specifically to make my workspace more like Lighthaven, and I can confirm that I've gotten a grant from SFF for one of the two orgs I started to reduce AI x-risks - so, you know, adjacent.

tbh i think we could replace the word "toxic" with the word "warped" entirely. that's exactly what it's like. it's infuriating bc you KNOW they're good and you want the same things but it just. doesn't. work. you can't even define where the friction and mismatch and exhaustion comes from but it's there. it's a painful process, emotional erosion, and over time you get warped too.
