🚨 WATCH: Green MP Ellie Chowns attacks Andy Burnham for approving Jackdaw gas field instead of keeping fossil fuels "in the ground" Burnham: "Can I just say that the gas would still be needed? It would just be imported from somewhere else if we didn't use our own" #PMQs

how to become a slave to centralised AI: 1) auto-approve all permissions, never look at the code, never ask for an explanation of a change—move FAST!!!1 2) as your codebase gets more complex, lean harder into (1) 3) 'pls sirs, release new models... my family is dying'

this was true, too, of spending all day speaking to computers before LLMs
how it feels to interact with my human family after another 14 hour day of interacting with Claude

You know all those studies claiming to explain what LLMs are thinking by looking at their attention weights? Yeah, they're just making crap up. The AI equivalent of reading the thoughts of a dead salmon. 🐟
Researchers put a dead salmon in an fMRI scanner, showed it pictures of humans, and asked it to guess their emotions. The scan showed brain activity. In a dead fish. Now, the recent study proved that the exact same thing is happening in artificial intelligence. They call it the "Dead Salmons of AI Interpretability" When we use tools like feature attribution, SHAP values, or mechanistic interpretability to see "inside the black box," these methods often generate plausible-looking explanations from completely meaningless computations. You can completely randomize a model's weights and the "saliency map" explanation still looks perfectly valid. You can nudge the data slightly and the entire narrative of why the ai made a decision completely rewrites itself. the researchers call this a "crisis of non-identifiability." the math we use to explain ai behavior is so overdetermined that it is making up stories instead of measuring ground truth. this is a massive reality check for ai alignment and safety.. we are trusting frontier models with critical decisions based on "explanations" that are statistically equivalent to a dead fish having social emotions.. the fix? the authors argue we have to stop treating interpretability like a visualization tool and start treating it as a rigorous statistical inference problem. if your explanation survives a random model check, a label shuffle, and an intervention test.. then maybe you actually understand the model. if not, you're just looking at a dead salmon.

To nearly 2yo reluctant to eat, because sore throat, and _locked in_ on taking her sandals off and on and off and on (a recent unlock): "Would you like some yoghurt?" "No yogut." "Would you like some porridge?" "No powidge." "Would you like some milk?" "No mayulk." "What would you like?" "I like shoes."

Are LLMs a decentralising technology? Not at the moment, on net.
Replying to @p_millerd
It has this decentralising effect, but (so far) at the cost of increasing dependence on a few huge (and very 'centralised') players: OpenAI, Anthropic, etc. This is a bit perverse IMO. If nothing else, we should be less hasty to juice these honeypots—be it with API keys or medical information—and more skeptical of giving such intimate control of our computers to third parties. LLM-AI won't be a truly decentralising tech until open-source, open-weight, local models are the norm. Though perhaps the convenience of a cloud subscription will always trump other concerns, for most people.

Check out our handy calculator and remind @andyburnham why fuel is so expensive gbtt.info/real-cost-of-fuel
I know people are worried about fuel prices. And I get it. You get to the pump, watch the numbers climb, and wonder why it's costing so much more than it used to.   The reality is that global events are pushing up costs, and families here at home are feeling the impact.   But I won't accept that there's nothing I can do to help.   That's why from today, you'll be able to see petrol and diesel prices on Google Maps, compare nearby stations and find the cheapest option before you fill up.   It's a small change, but if there's a practical way to help people keep more money in their pocket, I'll do it.

I wrote a book, and it is finally here! And it is a book about something nobody ever written, even when thousands of people use these things every day. Higher Order Functions - these are functions that either accept functions as parameters, or return functions, or both. They are extremely powerful form of abstraction, that replace not only most of design patterns, but also can simplifty algorithms. This is the core focus of my book. On hundred or so of algorithms I am showing, how HOFs can make many algorithms (I picked ones from operations research, but the lesson is universal) easier to update, reason about, and reuse. If you are a curious developer or SW architect, who wants to dramatically simplify your algorithms while making them more universal, without sacrificing performance, this is a book for you. In 3 weeks from now, you will be able to order it.
