The evidence is stacking up 🛰️
New @Stanford research shows that satellites offer accurate, trustworthy #methane data. @planet's Tanager-1 detected 100% of cloud-free releases with no false plumes.
With Tanager-2 in space, our impact will grow. ⬇️ spacenews.com/space-based-me…
🌍 Plumes of the Week
Tanager-1 spotted a large #methane plume in the Permian Basin on Oct. 10. Two days later, Tanager-2 imaged the same source, and we detected methane again.
More satellites with @planet = faster revisits and more data on persistent emitters 🛰️

Can satellites be trusted to find methane leaks? A blind @Stanford study says yes 🛰️
Researchers staged 481 methane releases in the Arizona desert. Using Tanager-1, Carbon Mapper detected 100% of its cloud-free releases with zero false plumes.

Trustworthy, science-based data turns satellite monitoring into action.
Operators can find and fix leaks fast. Regulators and policymakers can make decisions with confidence.

Tanager-2's first looks at Earth are in. 👀 🌎 And this week's #PlumeOfTheWeek is a big one.
🛰️ Just days after launch, we spotted a large methane plume from a landfill near Spain's coast.
Two Tanager satellites in orbit with @planet means faster revisits & action on emissions.
With Tanager-2 in orbit, California can look for methane leaks at more locations, more often.
Satellite data has already helped fix 18 major leaks in the state, equal to taking ~32,000 cars off the road for a year.

🌍 #PlumeOfTheWeek
For #ClimateWeekNYC, we highlight a large #methane plume at a landfill in New York State with emissions of ~456 kg/hr. We also detected emissions at this #waste site twice in 2025.
👀 The landfill takes in about 284,502 metric tons of waste a year and was approved to expand in 2018. In July 2025, local news reported an underground fire burning across much of the active site.
💡 Cutting landfill methane could successfully lower New York's emissions, along with co-pollutants that harm public health. The state is considering advanced monitoring in new landfill rules.

🌍 Plume of the Week: Carbon Mapper detected a methane plume at a waste-to-energy complex on the outskirts of Hanoi, Vietnam (May 27, 2026). It's the world's 2nd-largest facility of its kind, processing 4,000–5,000 tons/day — about 70% of the city's total waste output. 🧵
Waste that can't be processed here is landfilled instead, which can drive more emissions and odors. Hanoi — part of the C40 climate network — plans to expand the facility to fully process the region's waste as generation grows past 7,600 tons/day.
