If we are going add residential density, more of this specially added housing could be universal, and could serve to provide housing options to keep seniors in their communities.
Excellent housing affordability articles I've read recently: lincolninst.edu/sites/defaul… and thenation.com/article/zoning… @landpolicy @DrUrbanPolicy @urbenschneider @sguzman6 @AARPLivable
Our colleague, Olav Rand Bringa, has been a primary catalyst for universal design adoption in Norway for over 15 years. In this first in a series of articles about their experience, Mr. Bringa explores UD in a way finding context. ow.ly/H53g30omzGl #universaldesign
Some adaptation is actually OK. Less so in public settings, obviously. But in residential where we spend a lot of time, mainstream marketable UD homes have to be high function, but can't be built with the custom accessibility features that can be easily added later.
We are not surprised at this statistic. Much cheaper to design/build new or to add UD to an already planned renovation.
According to a study from NZ, cited by the World Health Organization, it is approximately 22 times more cost-efficient to build housing that includes key accessibility features than it is to retrofit when an unplanned need arises.
22x! 😮

One Floor Living, NOT the only Option
I live in a one-story home now. It will be relatively easy to adapt to our needs in later years. But we could have selected a home with two or more stories as long as key function areas were o…lnkd.in/dGPYCQu lnkd.in/d3e6teu
I have said that it's hard to make townhome style homes (small, narrow footprint, multiple stories) work for life long living. These folks have added stacked closets and step-free entrances and interior features that can work for a wide range of folks! ow.ly/152830ngoDS
We need buildings with features for people who are blind, deaf, low vision, people hard of hearing, bad backs, arthritis, balance, strength, and stamina issues too. We need to infuse all buildings with these characteristics! ow.ly/w1Mp30nezQ4 #accessibility
