Founders are desperately seeking venture capital funds (VCs) to finance their startups and grow. But products themselves are not growing the way all those unicorns grew; they need to grow on their own.
A founder’s focus should be on not needing funding. If they want to grow and can avoid doing so through venture capital investment, that is much better. Of course, applying to startup competitions, grants, and those kinds of programs takes time, but the dilution and above all, the pressure imposed by venture capital funds is too much.
When a founder fails to meet the metrics they committed to when signing the terms, a venture capital fund simply dilutes the owner or founder to the point where they may ultimately lose their company. Studies such as Azevedo’s show that [88\%] of startups over the past [20] years did not generate even one dollar for their founders at exit. In other words, founders walked away with nothing after taking VC money.
It is not that venture capital funds are bad. The problem is that bringing them in when you need them comes at a very high price. Bringing them in when you no longer need them, because you are already growing significantly through your own capital, your own cash flow, and your own momentum—can be worthwhile if it allows you to triple that growth quickly.
But if all you have is an idea, or if your startup is still in survival mode, and you focus on meeting with [100] or [200] VCs to raise enough money to avoid going under, then you are not focusing on what really matters: getting your product into the market, getting customers to buy it, and getting paid for it. That’s why at Campvs AI, we are focused on reaching schools across Latin America through our sales force. We may never become a unicorn, and you know what? that is okay. We are growing sustainably and will continue to grow because we believe we offer the best educational solution for our region.
