I'm excited to announce the official Nullschool app is here!
earth.nullschool.net on mobile browsers works fine, but the app is nicer. Full screen display, persistence across sessions, text size that matches device settings.
And, like the website: no ads!
Links below ⬇️
This newsletter post has more details. Please give the app a try and let me know what you think. Always happy to get feedback!

The @NCAR_Science is quite literally our global mothership.
Nearly everyone who researches climate and weather - not only in the US, but around the world - has passed through its doors and benefited from its incredible resources.
The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) supports the scientists who fly into hurricanes, the meteorologists who develop new radar technology, the physicists who envision and code new weather models, and yes - the largest community climate model in the world. That too.
Dismantling NCAR is like taking a sledgehammer to the keystone holding up our scientific understanding of the planet.

Published a newsletter post explaining why weather sites/apps that rely on gridded model data (including my own) do not show max hurricane wind speeds correctly.

It's really so important // here in Japan, which gets positive cherry picked stories about "oh look at this sacred temple tree! so carefully cared for" there is very little budget/attention given by municipal/prefectectural govs to maintaining parks forests & street trees
SST anomaly updates are unavailable on earth.nullschool.net. The updates come from @NOAANCEI, located in Asheville, NC. They are offline due to Hurricane Helene. Sincerely hoping everyone over there is OK.

The only other major hurricane to pass within 100 miles of where #Beryl is on Monday morning was Ivan in September 2004, and that was at Category 3 intensity. These islands have no experience with a Category 4 hurricane in recorded history.

✨ New features launched on earth.nullschool.net: wet bulb temp and dew point.
Thought it would be easy, but found myself down a rabbit hole of atmospheric thermodynamics.
Posted an explainer here: news.nullschool.net/p/new-fe…
But wet bulb temp need not get that high. As it passes 28 °C (82 °F), significant heat stress starts to build up. The worry is climate change will increase the chance of wet bulb temps reaching lethal levels.
