Yanagimachi is one of the great 80s filmmakers, a criminally underseen, uncompromising independent talent. HIMATSURI stands as perhaps his greatest achievement, a tale of modernity vs nature and the erosion of human values—praised by Susan Sontag. Major news to see a re-release!

Digger is dialectical cinema. It laughs at the audience for laughing at it. It laughs at those who criticise movies by pointing out contradictions in them. Digger embraces the contradiction and digs its way out to something new entirely.

I rewatched Obayashi's Switching - Goodbye Me and it's even richer on second viewing, a thing of beauty both on the surface (take a bow cinematographer Katsuhiro Kato) and at its heart. It's in desperate need of a Western release....(pretty please @thirdwindow )

Switching - Goodbye Me, Nobuhiko Obayashi's remake of his own ATG classic Transfer Students, might be his most profound and moving work. Thematically bridging his 80s works to his late period, it feels like a very personal study of mortality, identity and legacy.

Not enough is said about Sōmai Shinji’s P.P. RIDER (1983), a film penned by Leonard and Chieko Schrader in which three teens adventure to rescue their high school bully from the yakuza after he is kidnapped in a big net. Some of the most dynamic long takes you’ll ever see
This is an incredible best-of-year release from Radiance. Praying for them to do Passion and Nouvelle Vague as well
It's arrived.
Jean-Luc Godard's roving, essayistic video project - cited by @SightSoundmag as one of the 100 Great Films of All Time - plus other late period achievements including Godard's final film, SCÉNARIOS, are collected in HISTOIRE(S) DU CINEMA AND OTHER WORKS (LE).
The late Tony Rayns said that March Comes in Like a Lion "could be the archetypal love story for the '90s: a picture about the tricks and traps of desire and the courage and will needed to overcome them." Anyone else that would be interested in seeing it get a release?

To be honest, I really can't see it selling, and I have too many titles recently which aren't even recouping so need to be a little more careful with what I put out.

Incredible news that @SecondRunDVD will be releasing a new restoration of Mohsen Makhmalbaf's A Moment of Innocence, one of the great masterworks of Iranian cinema.

You are confusing preservation with distribution, which is an entirely different, and concerning, issue. I don't know any archives that would consider DVDs as preservation elements, and I don't know any archivists who wouldn't want their work more widely seen.
Not entirely sure why this seems to have gone viral but would love to see this film. However, think the energy of 16k likes might be better channeled into suggesting Yazaki's shorter, more easily releasable films like March Comes in Like a Lion, which also has a restoration
