🔥 We kicked off today’s Day of Action with a press conference in the Bronx at City Council Member Pierina Sanchez’s office. NYCEM's Commissioner Farrell and FDNY's First Deputy Commissioner Flynn joined us to highlight how simple fire safety steps can save lives and protect homes and neighbors.   Throughout the day, NYC Emergency Management and @FDNY hit the streets across all five boroughs to share FDNY’s Take 5! Fire Safety Tips and help New Yorkers stay safe.   🔥 Here are 5 tips to remember: 1️⃣ Plug large appliances directly into wall outlets. 2️⃣ Always stay by your pan while cooking. 3️⃣ Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms work on every floor and near where you sleep. 4️⃣ Have an escape plan and practice it. 5️⃣ Charge and store lithium-ion batteries outside when possible, and dispose of them properly.   Our Strengthening Communities partners have been hitting the streets to spread the word and help keep their neighborhoods safe. Take 5 minutes to learn these tips. They could save your life! #FireSafety #FDNY #NYCEM #DayOfAction #NYC

Proud of our Government Relations team which was recognized for outstanding service. No matter the question or emergency, our small but mighty team is on it, working with all our elected partners. Also happy to cheer on all the excellent workers at our sister agencies!

These networks are such an important force multiplier for @nycemergencymgt and NYC. Through winter weather, extreme heat, nor’easters & other hazards, they reach out to their neighbors, help them prepare, and share important resources. We are looking for more networks to join!
In just six years, NYC Emergency Management’s Strengthening Communities program has trained, engaged, and partnered with more than 54 community and faith-based networks and coalitions across NYC!   These partners create their own emergency plans, lead preparedness efforts in their neighborhoods, and help connect NYC government with the communities they serve.   Now, we’re opening applications to welcome more incredible community and faith-based networks that are already making a difference in their neighborhoods. When the next emergency happens, we want you on the call, working alongside NYC Emergency Management to help keep New Yorkers safe.   Ready to make a difference? Apply today! on.nyc.gov/SC2026

Kudos to Sabina Sethi Unni and everyone involved in Please Don’t Flush. What a fun way to educate NYers about catch basins, @NotifyNYC and why you should never, ever flush wipes. Special shoutout to @nycemergencymgt ‘s own Jill Cornell. 👏👏👏

Yokarina es la mejor. ¡Tenemos mucha suerte de tenerla!
NYC Emergency Management Chief of Staff and Director of Strategy Yokarina Duarte-Medina was featured by El Diario as one of the Latina women serving in senior roles across the Mamdani administration. Duarte-Medina watched her mother navigate City agencies and it taught her early that government must be accessible, treat people with dignity, and provide information people can actually understand. That experience continues to shape her work at NYCEM, where she helps guide agency strategy and works to make preparedness information more accessible to Spanish-speaking New Yorkers, including through Spanish-language materials and the agency’s Prepárate podcast. For Duarte-Medina, representation means bringing those experiences with you into government, and using them to make government work better for the people who have to rely on it.

Nor'easter update for NYC: coastal flooding could reach minor to locally moderate levels during high tides Thursday evening through Saturday, largely around Jamaica Bay. Tonight's high tide could also bring minor flooding there. 🗺️ The storm is still tracking north well offshore, and the heaviest rain is forecast to stay east of NYC over southeastern New England. For the city, that means gusty winds, weekend rain, and high-tide flooding near the shore. 💨 Gusts will build through the week: 25 to 35 mph today and Thursday, 30 to 45 mph Friday, and 30 to 40 mph Saturday. Secure loose items on balconies, rooftops, and patios, and keep your phone charged. 🌧️ Today and Thursday stay dry. Rain could start as early as late Friday evening, with a 45% to 60% chance of light to briefly moderate rain through the weekend. Totals of 0.5 to 1.25 inches are possible over two to two and a half days. 🚗 Expect some ponding on roads: slow down, allow extra time, and never drive through standing water. 🚫 If you live or travel near the water, do not drive, walk, or swim through floodwaters, including flooded roads, underpasses, and low-lying areas. Turn Around, Don't Drown. 🏖️ Rip current risk is high through Saturday. 📲 Our team is tracking this storm with @NWSNewYorkNY every day, and we'll share updates as the forecast changes. Text NOTIFYNYC to 692-692 or visit nyc.gov/notifynyc. Basement apartment residents: sign up at nyc.gov/notify and select the basement apartment option to receive automated phone call alerts during flooding. Call 911 in an emergency and 311 for non-emergency City services.
