After years of debate, "Chat Control", a dangerous law that could mandate mass scanning and weaken encryption, nears its final hurdle.
Read here what is really cracking off.

There's a real danger in pretending that social media bans and age verification will make the internet a safer space for young people.

#Simplification: Cause for concern here: Plans to cut red tape (ok) but hopefully not at the expense of user privacy rights (not ok). The banger is the withdrawal of the E-Privacy Regulation (destiny of the derogation under the EPD to enable voluntary scanning unclear) /
Another example of the “kill-list” is the AI Liability Directive (renders the EP consultation obsolete?) and the EU Public Access Law. Unclear how this agenda, if at all, could apply to recent laws on platform regulation. commission.europa.eu/publica… /FIN

check out @doctorow blog post on why this matters: eff.org/deeplinks/2024/10/eu…
The #DigitalFairnessAct is high up on the Commission's agenda. Today, a "Fitness Check" was published.
1. Some take-aways:
- insufficient enforcement of consumer law
- which must also catch up with DSA/DMA/AI act
- CPC network deemed not very effective /1
My take: solid report with caveats. Fairness by design sounds good but doesn’t fit. Some statements are bold (consumer law irrelevance with recent bills) or lack data. National issues are underappreciated (CPC), and other laws may better tackle some issues (DMA, Brussels Ia). 4/4
