Can you tell what it is?
How will AI taste?
A few months ago, in preparation for a then upcoming lecture, I asked… What is/will be the role of a human Creative in a world of AI creations?.
Ahead of the new academic year, I’d like to share a few posts on what the students and I uncovered in our discussions on AI and the future of creativity.
First up… Taste vs. Talent.
👅 vs. 🌟.
It’s how I’ve always tried to evaluate a Junior Creative’s work. Their talent at this stage is almost irrelevant, what’s important is the idea and the execution that they are aiming for. If their ambitions are high, and their driven to improve, the talent will come. They’ll get there.
But if their ideals are already eminently achievable; they’ve set their finish line before they’ve started.
As Scroobius Pip said… If your only goal is to be as good as (insert name here), then as soon as you achieve that, your standards will slip.
Think of it as your internal prompt. Best make it a good one.
AI has talent. AI has no taste. Yet*.
Taste is where we win. For now.
*This word will come up A LOT when talking about AI.
P.S. The Creative Act: A Way of Being by @RickRubin and Tetragrammaton, Rick’s Podcast, including episodes with Paula Scher and @rorysutherland, are both highly recommended.
Same as it ever was.
Past. Present. Future.
🪨. 💻. 🤖.
As our discussion drew to a close, the overarching mood of the students was one of optimism.
They are up for the challenge.
And they see AI as a new resource to be excited by.
There are two ways to regard technological development. As a threat. Or as a promise.
Created in 1977, the resonance this ad still has today is a testament to its brilliance.
Computer technology has given humans more time to create, and released them from the day-to-day tasks that limit their self-fulfilment.
Imagine what AI could give us.
To treat technology as a threat would halt progress.
As a promise it makes tomorrow look a lot brighter.

Two men were watching a mechanical excavator on a building site.
“If it wasn’t for that machine,” said one, “twelve men with shovels could be doing that job.”
“Yes,” replied the other, “and if it wasn’t for your twelve shovels, two hundred men with teaspoons could be doing that job."
