Soccer is massive in the USA
MLS is not massive in the USA
🇺🇸 is a world class market for soccer & its people go bonkers for authentic club soccer every year.
USA soccer is drastically held back by the U.S. Soccer Federation/MLS closed system.

No promotion/relegation.

The @HoustonDynamo have a #TexasDerby match against FC Dallas, @BrianChing is being honored in the Ring of Honor, and a win can clinch a playoff spot.
Three compelling reasons to get fans into @ShellEnergyStdm.
So here’s my question: if a game like this can’t sell out, what does it take?
What’s keeping fans away?

If college football embraces #ProRelForUSA before American soccer - American soccer only has itself to blame.
Again.

Should MLS and USL combine and create a fully-open promotion/relegation system from division 1 down to the grassroots/amateur level?
ANYONE can start a club at the base of the USA soccer pyramid and win promotion up to division 1 through their play on the field.

Dear World:
If you’d like to protect the game, get behind the FIFA candidate fully committed to merit based promotion/relegation.
None of the candidates I’ve seen floated have that conviction.

Keep in mind that this is in USA soccer's lower divisions beneath the glass ceiling of a closed division 1.
USA soccer is ready for promotion/relegation.

You don’t hear “developed in La Liga”, “La Liga 3”, and “La Liga Youth”.
That’s because in legitimate football, clubs are the fundamental entity.
In the US, one single entity owns all the teams and, with that monopoly power, puppeteers the Federation.
Of course *all the domestic players are going to come from the monopoly.
That’s not an accomplishment.
That’s a priori going to be the case.
Developed in @MLS, @MLSNEXTPRO, @MLSNEXT ⚽️
In the @USMNT's October window, 21 of the 28 players have ties to Major League Soccer's ecosystem.

Tonight in USA soccer history:
70,000 Americans going bonkers for authentic global soccer in... South Carolina???
🚨 USA does *NOT* have a soccer popularity shortage
🚨 USA *DOES* have an MLS leeching on its division 1 sanction + no pro/rel problem

Community and people are the lifeblood of authentic club soccer. That is what most in USA soccer don't understand. That is why the MLS model will never be relevant in USA soccer.

You’d have to watch the full video to completely understand the context, but when I think about my biggest takeaway from the last few years operating professional soccer game-day environments, I keep coming back to one demographic: Families.
That audience is broader than it sounds. There are young children experiencing the game for the first time, kids beginning to form an attachment to a club, and then the 10+ audience where so many are youth soccer players themselves. For parents, many of them will have played the game. Others will admire or respect it, and including for the role modeling for their own kid about what the path of athletic achievement looks like.
Game-day environments should be built with them in mind. These are people you can grow with. Children can develop a connection with a club that lasts for decades. Parents are looking for an affordable, family-first experience that leaves them feeling their time and money were well spent—and wanting to come back.
That doesn’t mean ignoring your most passionate supporters. Quite the opposite. Building an authentic supporter culture from Day 1 is essential to creating the atmosphere that makes professional soccer special. But you also have to build for the future.
Create an environment where someone can bring their five-year-old to a match for the first time—and potentially create a supporter for life.
That’s how you build a club generationally.

Japan implemented promotion/relegation very early in the J-League project.
MLS and USSF have no excuse.
