🇯🇲🐟 Jamaican research in the international spotlight!
Proud to share that our research has been featured by Discover Wildlife, the website of BBC Wildlife magazine!
Published today, the feature highlights our paper in the Caribbean Journal of Science, documenting the spinycheek sleeper (Eleotris pisonis) in Jackson’s Bay Great Cave, Clarendon.
What began as an invertebrate survey in 2017 led to an unexpected encounter—and the first photographic documentation of this fish in the cave.
It is exciting to see research from The University of the West Indies, Mona, bringing Jamaica’s remarkable underground wildlife to an international audience. Our caves hold stories that deserve to be explored, understood and protected.
Big up to my co-authors and everyone supporting Jamaican biodiversity research! 👏🏾🇯🇲

Scientists in Costa Rica have moved 2,700 corals into deeper water in the Gulf of Nicoya to shield them from ocean heat driven by El Niño. Warming Pacific waters are raising the risk of bleaching on the reefs.
The corals belong to the restoration project run by the State Distance University...

Good news.. Rewilding low-lying islands and removing alien species, like rats, helps them withstand sea level rise, research on 28 atolls finds. Seabird droppings increase vegetation, stabilise soils and promote faster growth of protective coral reefs.

Once rainforest burns, it won’t recover in our lifetime.🌳❌
Endangered species will disappear.
Indonesia holds MORE endemic wildlife than anywhere on earth.🦧
Pictured here are faces from just Borneo. Rainforest is irreplaceable and we have to protect every last inch of it! 🥹

Flying cars? WHO CARES?
Borneo has Flying Frogs, Geckos, Squirrels & more that are way cooler and disappearing right now from fires!🌳🔥
They only need a shred of funding that these flying cars are getting to help survive. When will we get our priorities right?

Last night in the Turtle River Park parking lot in Ocho Rios, St Ann. Older gentleman casually throws his KFC out of his car, and after a few minutes drives further down in the parking lot (you can see his car in my rear view mirror).
I confront him about it and he lies, says it fell off the top of his car and he didn’t realise. I tell him there’s a massive dumpster literally a few inches away. It would take him 20 seconds to get to it. Maybe 10 if he takes larger strides.
Clearly embarrassed, he apologises, leaves his car, picks up the garbage, and what does he do with it? He throws it behind the hedge you’re seeing in the picture. In his mind, it’s not littering if nobody can see it.
I confront him again, explaining that the dumpster was right in front of him. He says, “Me never see it. Me dash it innah di bush.” I said, “Throwing it in the bush is wrong.” He says, “It wi rotten.”
At that point I realised all hope was lost.

To be affiliated with a brand such as NatGeo was always the goal. And today, we're here. When Rivers Speak is a year long project where I get to create a story of how we humans connect with water. And although I am not officially an explorer we're that much closer to the dream. – at Dominica

Soil sealing prevents cities from cooling naturally and increases flood risks.
Soil sealing: easy to do, hard to undo.
Healthy soils absorb water, help reduce flooding and build resilience to climate extremes.
#SoilHealth #GreenCities #ElNiño
Soil biodiversity represents one of the largest carbon stocks on Earth and plays a major role in fighting #ClimateChange.
But with around a 1/3 of the world’s land already degraded, we need to keep soils healthy.
