On St. Crispin's Day, October 25, 1415, an outnumbered English army under King Henry V won at Agincourt. Shakespeare gave him the greatest speech on brotherhood: "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers." It still stirs the heart. (Kenneth Branagh, Henry V, 1989)

King Henry V of England. A Christian king, soldier and conqueror. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Crowned in 1413, Henry spent his short reign making England a formidable power. A disciplined commander and deeply religious man, he led his armies personally, conquered much of Normandy and secured recognition as heir to the French throne. He died in 1422, before he could inherit it, leaving an infant son and a reputation as one of England’s greatest warrior kings. Shakespeare later gave him some of the most famous words in English literature: “Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more!” “God for Harry, England, and Saint George!”

👑🇫🇷⚔️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 King Henry V, Thomas Lord Camoys,(left) & Sir William Phelipp Lord Bardolf at the Battle of Agincourt 1415. From the Osprey Men At Arms Series, these illustrations are based on their tomb effigies which were created between 1421-1441, so their armors may not perfectly represent what they wore at Agincourt, but are probably very close; they would have worn the latest plate armor for the period. Artwork & effigies dated 1410-1420 commonly depict similar harness, including great bascinets, besagews, and long plate faulds.
⚔️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇫🇷OTD in 1415 The Battle of Agincourt took place…Henry V triumphs against all odds. This battle is one that fascinated me as a kid and one that really fanned the flames of my love of medieval history from an early age. Recommending the book “Agincourt” by Bernard Cornwell, a historical fiction where the main character is a lowly English archer who eventually finds himself fighting at The Battle of Agincourt. It is a standalone and not part of a series. Great book and author.

On this date in 1415 the battle of Agincourt took place. A fascinating bit of history that also gave us Shakespeare's masterpiece 'Henry V' and several glorious films. Here are clips from 3 films showing the famous, delicious, rousing speech:

25th October 1415 - The Battle of Agincourt 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Outnumbered and exhausted, King Henry V and his English army faced the might of French chivalry on a muddy battlefield in northern France. Against overwhelming odds, the English held firm. Their longbowmen unleashed volleys of arrows as the French advanced through the mud. Faith, discipline, courage and sheer English grit carried the day. Before battle, Henry and his men prayed to God. After their victory, they gave thanks through the 𝑻𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒖𝒎. The words of 𝑵𝒐𝒏 𝑵𝒐𝒃𝒊𝒔 𝑫𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒆 declare: "Not unto us, O Lord, but unto thy name give glory." They fought beneath the Cross of St George, trusting in God and standing shoulder to shoulder. "Cry God for Harry, England, and Saint George!" 611 years later, we remember the Englishmen who fought and died at Agincourt. This is our history. These are our forefathers. Honour them 🏹 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Today in 1415, an English army led by Henry V defeats a much larger French force near Calais at Azincourt (or Agincourt). A play by Shakespeare will later immortalize the battle: "Gentlemen in England shall think themselves accursed they were not here."

Today in 1415, Henry V's sick and starving army of archers defeated the flower of French chivalry in the mud of Agincourt. It was a catastrophic defeat for France The French led by Constable of France Charles d'Albret had an army of about 14,000 to 15,000. King Henry V's forces numbered about 6,000 to 8,000 men. Outnumbering the English about 2 to 1. The English men-at-arms wearing plate and mail armor stood shoulder to shoulder four men deep. On the flanks of the army the English and Welsh archers would be ordered by King Henry to carve wooden stakes, one for each man. The days leading up to the battle were characterized by heavy rains, turning the recently plowed fields of Agincourt into a muddy, soggy mess. French cavalry charged towards the English archers. Unable to charge through the stakes and unable to outflank the archers, the attempt was a disaster and many of the cavalry's horses were cut down by arrows causing disarray. The heavy plate armor of the French knights and men-at-arms allowed them to advance while under fire. The French monk of Saint Denis described it as a "terrifying hail of arrow shot". It is suggested that many French soldiers died by suffocating in their armor or even drowning in the muddy field. The fighting lasted three hours. King Henry fought hand to hand according to English contemporary accounts. Charles d'Albret, Constable of France would be killed in battle, along with John I, Duke of Alençon. About 600 English soldiers would die and about 6,000 French would die, many of which were nobles. A massive English victory for Henry.
