After more than 36 hours of continuous negotiations, we have a clean text for an agreement for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction – #BBNJ
Almost 24 hours to go to adopt an ambitious, fair and equitable treaty for areas beyond national jurisdiction. Delegates are still at UN working on developing an access benefit sharing mechanism.#bbnj
To build on its strength, the G16 can
💪Strengthen unity through cooperation on tuna beyond IOTC negotiations
🤝Better comprehend the underlying causes of lack of cooperation and address them early
🐟Reinforce the common need to sustain local livelihoods and food security
Despite the G16 efforts to participate in IOTC, capacity constraints remain. More than 50% of delegates participated only in 1 meeting, participation increased during online meetings, and G16 members have at least 2 times fewer advisors than distant fishing nations like the EU.
The G16 has shown long-term engagement with the annual IOTC Commission meeting. In the past 10 years, a total of 523 delegates from the G16 have attended, with 31 delegates from 14 different countries participating in five or more Commission meetings.
