I didn’t know my friends were so profound: The Moral Crossroads We Now Face Today’s events, the murder of Charlie Kirk, demand that every one of us in the Western world stop, take a breath, and truly reflect. We are at an inflection point. And while most of us sit in the echo chambers of our chosen political tribes, what we are witnessing is the wholesale abandonment of the very values both the left and the right claim to defend. Instead of asking “Which side started it?”, the far more urgent and moral question is: “How do we end it?” The cornerstone of any free society has always been the open exchange and debate of ideas. This exchange is not a luxury; it is the foundation upon which the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights were built. These documents were born from disagreement, debate, and compromise, not from silencing those we opposed. I have disagreed with much, if not most, of what Charlie Kirk has said. But with my last breath, I would defend his right to say it. That is the essence of a free society. The moment we begin to diminish or outlaw ideas simply because they oppose our own, we cross a threshold into something far darker than partisanship; we become the very enemies of liberty we claim to stand against. Ideas are meant to be tested, challenged, and, where wrong, defeated with better ideas, not with violence. Democracy did not appear fully formed; it emerged from centuries of trial, error, and hard-won lessons. It is not perfect. Perhaps something better will one day replace it. But we will never reach that next stage of human evolution without the free, even painful, exchange of ideas. No one should be executed for their political beliefs or for their vision of how a free society should function. Yet already, the blame game is in full swing: “The left is full of murderous demagogues.” “The right is full of fascist extremists.” This constant reflex to point fingers is a slow-acting poison. Some will dismiss today’s act as the work of a lone madman, an outlier unworthy of representing the whole. But that misses the point entirely; this is not an isolated madness; it is a symptom of the deeper sickness in how we, as a society, engage with one another in the public arena. If we cannot pause, face ourselves honestly, and acknowledge our shared humanity, even across the widest divides, then we are not just drifting toward danger. We are actively paving the road to something unthinkable: a civil war of ideology within a single people. For decades, we in the West have looked abroad, shaking our heads at other nations’ civil wars, convincing ourselves that we were “too evolved” to repeat such mistakes. But now, the warning signs are flashing here at home. If your first reaction to an opposing viewpoint is to respond with violence, censorship, or intimidation, driven by emotion rather than reason, then you are not defending freedom; you are eroding it. That is the behaviour of a demagogue, not a citizen of a free state. Our societies were not founded on the principle of comfort, but on the principle of resilience in the face of disagreement. The measure of our freedom is not in how we treat the ideas we agree with, but in how we defend the rights of those we oppose. Every single one of us, across all political affiliations, needs to do better. Not tomorrow. Not when “the other side” does it first. Now.
