Nice job @SapporoBeer… You promised Tony and Keith you’d be good stewards of this historic brand rooted in American tradition, and you clearly weren’t. @hamdiulukaya, will you be the caring Shepherd it deserves? God knows I would be. Let’s Go! 🍻⚓️ 🇺🇸 @AnchorBrewing @AnchorSteam #SanFrancisco @DanielLurie

Beer Of The Day! 🇺🇸🦅⚓....... Anchor Liberty Ale #craftbeer #ThrowbackThursday #america
Anchor Liberty Ale was a beer from Anchor Brewing Company, originally brewed on April 18, 1975 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Paul Revere’s ride. The story behind the brew ties it to the Revolutionary-era warning to American colonists that British soldiers were approaching, and it’s known for its refreshing bitterness driven by American-grown Cascade hops.
In style, Liberty Ale is considered a forerunner of the India Pale Ale (IPA) category, helping set the stage for the craft beer wave that took off later. It’s brewed using traditional methods and features a hop-forward profile, including being dry hopped.
Anchor Brewing Company, founded in 1896 in San Francisco, California, is one of America's oldest breweries and widely regarded as the birthplace of the modern craft beer movement.
Its roots trace back to the California Gold Rush era, when German brewers produced "steam beer"—a unique, high-carbonation American style born from local conditions without reliable refrigeration. The brewery survived multiple fires (including after the 1906 earthquake), Prohibition, and near-closure in the mid-1960s.
In 1965, Fritz Maytag (of the Maytag appliance family) bought the struggling operation for a modest sum, revived its historic Anchor Steam beer, introduced innovative offerings like Liberty Ale and Christmas Ale, and transformed it into a small-batch pioneer that inspired countless craft brewers.
It operated from its iconic Potrero Hill facility (built 1979) until Sapporo acquired it in 2017; production then declined sharply, leading to closure in 2023.
The Chobani yogurt founder purchased it in 2024 with reopening intentions, though as of mid-2026 the brewery's future in San Francisco remains uncertain amid limited updates. Anchor's legacy endures as a symbol of resilient, innovative American brewing.
