13 years ago today, Miss. Finis Adham Safadi was born to Druze parents in the Golan Heights of Israel.
She just wanted to play soccer.
But on July 27, 2024, Hezbollah launched a rocket that hit her soccer field in the Israeli city of Majdal Shams, one of Israel's last cities where the Druze people can live side-by-side with their family and neighborhoods.
She was one of 11 children who died.
Her father, a paramedic, was one of the EMTs who responded to the scene after the authorites were called.
“As soon as I entered the field, I saw my daughter and her friend lying on the ground. I looked at her; her body was intact, but she had suffered a head injury that left her no chance."
"I bent toward her, placed my hand on her chest, and asked her to forgive me,” he told Ynet

After the funeral last year, her father expressed crushing mourning.

I'm starting to request more full manuscripts at Canary Publishing, and I can't tell you how happy I am to make an author's day. I've been on the other side of the author/publisher query process, and I know how frustrating it can be. Also, the Jewish and Israeli writers I'm saying "yes" to have already had too many doors slammed in their faces due to bigotry in the literary community. Their loss is our gain.

I've honestly come to the conclusion that so many of the people who regularly talk about the war in Gaza simply don't understand the deadliness of modern war.
After 10/7, there simply is no universe where Israel waged war in Gaza, one of the most densely populated territories in the world, with no escape possible for Gazans (thanks, Egypt), no bomb shelters (thanks, Hamas), and with military resources hidden among the civilian population, that wouldn't lead to mass devastation and significant civilian casualties.
This endless destruction is why Netanyahu does not allow journalists into Gaza. If he actually believed that Israeli had shown great restraint and that public perceptions were mistaken, we'd all be invited in with cameras. But Bibi doesn't want the devastation documented or the survivors interviewed.

An Israeli family traveling in Austria 🇦🇹 was allegedly denied service because they were Jewish.
After already ordering food at a stand, the vendor threw out the burgers he was already preparing once he had learned that the family was Jewish.
The vendor has spoken to reporters, calling the incident nonsense, but would not go into further detail.
It did not matter if this family was from Israel. It did not matter if they had any direct affiliation with Israel. All that mattered was that they were Jews.
These hateful actions occur multiple times a week. To think we just read about it and move on to the next story, seemingly normalizing them, is troubling.

There is a subgenre of books now from survivors of the October 7, 2023, massacre. I know that because I'm reading them for Canary Publishing. They are horrific in their detail, and I need to take frequent breaks. One thing I'm learning that I did not previously know: The Hamas terrorists did not go into the kibbutzim to murder as many people as they could. If they did, the death toll would have been even greater. Instead, they took their time in each home to terrorize the inhabitants, torture them, rape them, and livestream their crimes to their families (the victims' and their own). They did so with joy and laughter. These criminals embody an evil that I have not heard of since growing up hearing accounts from my Holocaust-survivor relatives. Those in the West who excuse these crimes against humanity are just as complicit.

Ireland played Israel yesterday and half the country treated the fixture like a moral injury. A stain. As if sharing a pitch with Jews was the darkest thing their football history had ever asked of them.
October 17, 1936. Dalymount Park. Dublin. The German national team lined up in front of 28,000 people, threw out the Nazi salute, and stood through the anthem with the swastika hanging next to the tricolor. The Irish Free State had welcomed them off the plane. The bus that carried them through Dublin was dressed in Nazi flags. The players were proud to shake the German players hands.
The match programme went to auction decades later with the swastika still on the cover, sold as memorabilia. Ireland won 5-2.
That game is in the archive as a famous afternoon. This video is the proof, not a rumor.
So the stain, in the Irish telling, is Israel. Not hosting Hitler’s team in their own capital three years after he took power. Not the salute on their grass. Not the flag they allowed to fly.
They do not hate a fixture. They hate a people. 1936 told you which side they could live with and embraced as friends. Yesterday told you which side they still cannot.
