‘But Jesus knew. He knew the truth. He knew that the rich man can’t enter the kingdom of Heaven. He knew that the meek shall inherit the earth. He knew that the poor are blessed. But they have turned all that around. They have made Him say the opposite of what He meant. They have made Him say that the rich are blessed and the poor are cursed. They have made Him say that it’s all right to exploit your fellow man. They have made Him say that it’s all right to hoard while others starve. ’Jesus would spit in their faces if He saw what they have done to Him. Jesus would turn over their tables in the temple. Jesus would drive them out with a whip. Jesus would be in jail if He came back today. Jesus would be crucified again. ’Me and Jesus know. We know the truth. We know what has been done to us. We know what has been done to the world. And Karl Marx knew too. He knew the truth about the rich and the poor. He knew about the exploitation. He knew about the class struggle. He knew that the workers have nothing to lose but their chains. He knew that the world is divided into two classes—the exploiters and the exploited. He knew that the exploiters must be overthrown. ‘Me and Jesus and Karl Marx—we all know. We sit at the table together in my mind. We talk. We understand each other. We know the truth. But the world doesn’t know. The world has forgotten. The world has been lied to. The world has been fooled. The world has been robbed. The world has been enslaved. ‘But some day the truth will come out. Some day the people will know. Some day the people will rise up. Some day the table will be set again. Some day we will all sit down together—rich and poor, black and white, worker and owner. Some day the kingdom of God will come on earth. Some day…’

Let's face it: I'm scared, scared and frozen. First, I guess I'm afraid for myself... the old primitive urge for survival. It's getting so I live every moment with terrible intensity. It all flowed over me with a screaming ache of pain...

Many things regarded by us as essentials at that time were to be discarded a little later as the pressure of the primitive became more severe. Man can sustain life with very scanty means. The trappings of civilization are soon cast aside in the face of stern realities, and given the barest opportunity of winning food and shelter, man can live and even find his laughter ringing true.

To anyone familiar with the history of Germany in the 1930s, it's chilling to watch Trump in action.  Though I know intellectually it’s easy in hard economic times to rile people up with a hatred of outsiders, it's still surprising to watch this happen right in front of us.

When you discover yourself lying on the ground, limp and unresisting, head in the dirt, and helpless, the earth seems to shift forward as a presence; hard, emphatic, not mere surface but a genuine force—there is no other word for it but presence. To keep in motion is to keep in time and to be stopped, stilled, is to be abruptly out of time, in another time-dimension perhaps, an alien one, where human language has no resonance. Nothing to be said about it expresses it, nothing touches it, it’s an absolute against which nothing human can be measured…Moving through space and time by way of your own volition you inhabit an interior consciousness, a hallucinatory consciousness, it might be said, so long as breath, heartbeat, the body’s autonomy hold; when motion is stopped you are jarred out of it. The interior is invaded by the exterior. The outside wants to come in, and only the self’s fragile membrane prevents it.

For what are the words with which to summarize a lifetime, so much crowded confused happiness terminated by such stark slow-motion pain?

You don’t get to choose the family you’re born into, so you have to learn about them from the middle of the story. I dropped myself in yours like a baby duck.

I can’t get behind the idea that undocumented immigrants are inherently evil, because my own family taught me that you don’t need to cross a border illegally to bring evil into someone’s life. A whole family of evil taught me something I will never forget: evil has no color, no nationality, and no need for a passport. It doesn’t have to come from overseas. Sometimes, it’s already here. Sometimes, it shares your last name. But I’ve also learned that we don’t change the world by becoming what hurt us. We change it by choosing to live differently. By showing people, through our actions, that there is another way to be. Because where someone comes from doesn’t determine the evil they’re capable of, and where they’ve been doesn’t determine the good they’re capable of becoming.

I know what it feels like to be afraid, and I know that the answer isn’t to teach everyone else who to hate.
And yes, there is evil among every crowd. Probably more than any of us could ever truly know. I’m not naive enough to believe otherwise. But I am just as afraid of a man of my own race hurting me as I am of someone who looks different from me. I’m afraid of what my own mother might do in response to my speaking honestly about my upbringing. I’m afraid of the consequences of the monsters I associate with myself here. Every day, I live with fear. And closing our borders wouldn’t have changed that. It wouldn’t have changed my family. It wouldn’t have erased my experiences. It wouldn’t have protected me from the people I have reason to fear, because the people who have hurt me and the people I fear don’t all come from somewhere else.

I used to think my mom was a narcissist, but after later reflection… she must’ve been a sociopath. She liked it. Planned it. Waited for it. Would smile during it. She never once apologized, and trust me… even after I left… I begged time and time again for the smallest error to be corrected. I would’ve settled for next to nothing… I would’ve…

@Grimezsz I heard your poem about your daughter. I can’t fathom why someone would want to hurt you like that. I can’t understand why ‘he’ didn’t stop it. I heard you don’t like when people call you Claire, and isn’t that just so ironic? You were the first person I truly tried to learn the name of after years of attempting to forget. And I forgot it… all… the time. I’ve gotten better at learning names since. I’ve just gotta think…. It all must… mean… something.
