Adam's research validates a lot of what I've seen firsthand. Both good and bad faith opposition to AVs benefit from the public's unfamiliarity with the technology. But once AVs are actually on the streets, much of that skepticism quickly disappears.

Why is our next mayor putting Maryland and Virginia residents ahead of the safety of Washingtonians?
200 District residents are full-time ride share drivers, not “countless.”

The response from @Waymo to JLG’s tweet: “Waymo will support safer roads, hundreds of new jobs, and expanded access to reliable transportation options for communities across the District. We are committed to working with District leaders to deliver those benefits."
CM @charlesallen told me he'll still push the bill this year.
“AVs have the potential to lead to safer operations … but there is the risk of an impact on workforce" and that's why the bill will always use fees/VMT for a workforce displacement fund, he said.

A lot of people are very disappointed with JLG's decision to block AVs in DC. Talking to a lot of folks about what comes next.

For those who have been speaking up in support of AVs in DC, now is a good time to make sure the other members of the Transportation Committee hear from you, too. Bill B26-0684 is expected to be marked up in early November. dccouncil.gov/committees/com…

UPDATE: Allen tells me he still plans on moving the Waymo bill forward.
"Part of what we have built in is the strongest worker protections in any bill you have seen around the country," he tells me.

Yesterday, Waymo sent an email to LA riders asking for their help urging local officials to approve autonomous rides to LAX.
Waymo serves more than 120 square miles of Los Angeles, but there’s still one major place it isn’t allowed to go: LAX.
For now, there is a workaround: take a Waymo to the LAX/Metro Transit Center and transfer to the free shuttle to the terminals. It’s probably not as convenient as a curbside drop-off, but it’s better than nothing.
What do you think? Is there any reason Waymo shouldn’t be allowed to operate at LAX?

Requiring a driver in a driverless car doesn’t make sense.
Minneapolis is open for business, open to innovative technology, and open to a variety of transportation options.
Thoughtful regulation for safety is necessary, but not through a backdoor ban.

Always interesting to watch anti-AV companies and activists push elected officials into positions that are almost perfectly designed to get roasted online.

The safety case is undeniable. This is quite literally lifesaving technology

If a mayor blocks deployment of a system that cuts serious crashes by 90%, and people keep dying on those roads, that’s negligence and should be treated as such.
