That is to say, yes! The remaining moat is the artisanal: things that deep personal connection, love, belief, admiration, or respect for another human being will remain!

Personal update: Turns out that what I thought was leaving OpenAI became more of a sabbatical. When I left a few months ago, I felt that the most important thing to focus on was making AI more useful to people. But we’ve since entered a different regime of AI progress. One in which getting the safety and security challenges of increasingly capable AI right has to become a central priority. So I’ll be returning to OpenAI, joining @merettm to help chart a path through these challenges. There’s much work to do, so let’s get going.

One of my pet peeves: "An eng lead" is far from "the lead engineer" I see this all the time. Also for example "an ai director/vp" is far from "the director/vp of ai" A LOT of people misunderstand this. And grifters know and exploit that.
anthropic’s lead engineer btw.

Today, we introduce Priming Models, a new paradigm for training one-step generative models from scratch. No diffusion teacher. No flow map. No CFG. No JVP. We believe this work will challenge how we think about building one-step models. Joint work with @sitanch, @du_yilun, @parkwbin03, Bohyung Han. 🔥 1.19 FID one-step on ImageNet 256×256 while using substantially less compute, e.g., 12X less than Drifting-B, 6X less than Drifting-L 🎨 Scales to text-to-image generation (GenEval 0.82) 🤖 World modeling on RT-1 / Bridge-V2 Priming Model is built on one core message: [Reconstruction pretraining --> Distributional post-training].

first openai math results and now this
T&T Supermarket is opening its doors in San Francisco on Thursday, November 5! T&T CEO Tina Lee joined me on site at Masonic and Geary for an early look at the store and to talk about what it took to get this new store across the finish line. The city worked closely with T&T—Canada’s largest Asian grocery store—to make permitting easy, resulting in the fastest permitting process for any T&T location in the United States. Through PermitSF, we’re working to make permitting faster and more predictable. For T&T, that included clearer timelines and application requirements, better coordination across city departments, and the ability to submit key permits online. Grocery stores are an important part of a thriving city, and T&T is making a major investment in San Francisco. We’re going to keep improving the permitting process so businesses can invest, open their doors, and create jobs in our neighborhoods. See you at T&T on Nov. 5!

Big, big, big, big props for quasiriemann and no Siegel zeroes (with many other beauties in there), I’m kicking myself for talking all over about it being within reach but not actually having pushed. There are some sad stories related to their users getting scooped / conflicts of interest (kakeya maximal comes to mind), and obviously we had some of the problems (without commenting on precise rumours). We should put that aside for today though. It’s obviously the most significant moment in mathematical history.

Fun fact about (some) AI researchers / academics: the more senior you get, the more convinced you become that every new AI idea is something you already invented 20 years ago. Or, even better: wait until something actually works and then try convincing everyone that this is exactly what you’ve been saying all along. I was at a conference where a speaker was presenting their research. One academic stood up and said: what you’re doing is actually something I did a few years ago. The speaker was very polite and said thank you for pointing this out. Then a second researcher stood up and said, well I already did it this 10 years ago, you should cite my work. Then a third person said, I already did all of this about 20 years ago. It was the funniest thing ever.

I am very uncomfortable about people trying to ascribe religious force or a surrender of human judgment to AI models, and think it is a real safety issue.

We really have the greatest naming conventions in the AI era OpenAI: Luna → Moon Terra → Earth Sol → Sun Astra → Stars Anthropic: Haiku → Japanese poem Sonnet → 14-line poem Opus → Major work Fable → Moral story And then Google arrives with: Gemini 4 Argon → ... Just look at the image 😭

I’m happy that @OpenAI presents model evals this way. We should measure intelligence as a function of cost.
GPT-6.1 Sol: near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price. It’s the most cost-efficient model for its performance available today.
