It was kind of a blackpill for me when I realized that most of the great writing of the past would never have existed if it had been forced to go through the kind of editorial committee process that we've since made mandatory.
So I wrote an essay about it for @hedgehogreview.

"The saturation of everyday life and private social spaces with politics is a fundamentally totalitarian tendency."
Precisely. I wrote about this in 2021 in an essay on the Russian writer Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky, whose work just barely survived decades of Soviet censorship:

Sometimes I think the notion that great writers kill their darlings is a psyop by Big Editor.

This piece is a must read for Denis Johnson fans. Well done @brianeha.
As a rabid Denis Johnson fan I knew almost nothing of his life—charmed, savant-like and chaotic—before I read this @PoetryFound article.
The Ted Geltner book is on my to read list.
Whatever else he was, Denis Johnson was a wunderkind.
That comes through clearly in Ted Geltner's "Flagrant, Self-Destructive Gestures," the first book-length biography of Johnson (out now), on which I drew to write an essay on the man, the myth, the poet for @PoetryFound.

I have @MarkdeSilva1 to thank for getting me to read Hermann Broch's "The Sleepwalkers." Good Lord is this an extraordinary novel.
"Strike Force Constantine"
Sex Crimes Squad detectives have charged four men following an investigation into an international satanic child sex abuse material ring under Strike Force Constantine.
Strike Force Constantine was established by the State Crime Command’s Child Exploitation Internet Unit to investigate the online distribution of child sexual abuse involving ritualistic or satanic themes.

William H. Gass on literary affinities and antipathies:
"[Dickens's] readers loved him for his weaknesses because they shared them. Gaddis's critics hated him for the strengths they didn't have."

NEW/EXCLUSIVE: A French branch of HSBC closed a bank account maintained by Jeffrey Epstein in 2007 after compliance officers flagged transactions for suspicious activity, including payments tied to a modeling agent later accused of rape & sex trafficking
The previously unreported closure, which HSBC officials announced to Epstein in a letter dated Dec. 21, 2007, is the only known instance of a major bank closing one of his accounts before he pleaded guilty to sex offenses in Fla. in 2008.
