For @biorxivpreprint, the @brettlfoster lab used direct electrophysiological recordings in humans for a study that identified the dorsal posterior cingulate cortex as a key interface between value-based decision-making and memory. @skoslov ➡️spr.ly/6017BGdVN3

📢My lab at NYU currently has two open post-doc positions. We are interested in understanding perception, thinking, and hallucinations. We employ a range of cutting-edge techniques in human neuroscience (eg, 7T fMRI, MEG, iEEG/DES) and computational approaches (eg, DNN modeling)

New preprint from the lab! The fact that human brain activity can be measured at high res is *thrilling*. But often it's not spikes; it's "LFP". Sometimes LFP is 3x better for decoding (wow!). Sometimes it's a lot worse (sigh). Why? A mystery. Here, we explain (link next post)

Two lab presentation sessions tomorrow (sun) at #SfN25. Please checkout: 1 - Morning nano on memory dynamics [NANO011] chaired by Liz and Catrina, who will talk about when human hippocampal ripples occur across sleep/wake, and how high-gamma LFP relates to visual memory spiking.

2 - Afternoon poster group focusing on posterior medial cortex (PMC), where Seth will present on human LFP/spike activity during value and memory based decisions in human posterior cingulate [JJ13], and the launch of the PMC working group and our recent consensus survey [JJ12].

My longtime collaborator Dave Patterson (long-time faculty at @UCBerkeley, @TheOfficialACM Turing Award winner, and fellow @LaudeInstitute board member) wrote a very good op-ed about how continued investing in basic science and technology research is essential for the U.S. Dave describes the government funding his labs received, but also the impact: "For decades, my research received support from the NSF’s Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering, through grants and Ph.D. fellowships. All told, American taxpayers invested just under $100 million in the labs I helped lead. Accounting for inflation, technologies that came out of them went on to generate over $1 trillion in product sales. That is a 10,000-to-1 return on investment to the public and surely at least 1,000-to-1 return directly back to the government in taxes. Not from luck, but from decades of public investment." ... "Every American taxpayer is a silent shareholder in that success. If we walk away now, we lose not just future breakthroughs but also what we have already earned." Continuing to invest in basic research in the U.S. is what leads to these sorts of extraordinary outcomes. thehill.com/opinion/technolo…
