🚨 New Paper! 🚨
Your agent is writing code faster than you can understand it 😬
In our controlled online study, coding agents helped users finish tasks quickly, but reduced how well they understood the code they just “wrote”
We also find three ways to avoid this tradeoff 👇🧵

Nihar Shah did a heroic experiment for TMLR: he spent 20-25 hours over two weeks interviewing authors of seemingly low-quality submissions about their own papers.
He confirmed what we all suspected: people submitting these papers have *no idea* what is going on in them.
TMLR has faced a deluge of submissions, necessitating stricter desk rejection policies due to limited reviewer capacity
Co-EiC Nihar Shah reached out to authors of 10 papers slated for desk reject. Could they answer questions about their *own* submission?

I'm going to be doing a live "ask me anything" next week (Monday 21:00 Singapore time, 9:00 Eastern US Time, 15:00 Europe) on YouTube on graduate admissions. Links in the thread for how to submit questions and how to view.
If you already have questions, feel free to ask them here (or vote on existing questions):

ACL Sustainable Reviewing Policy: We are introducing changes in the @ReviewAcl reviewing and submissions. The changes will cap authors and introduce changes in the reviewing to keep our community sustainable. #NLProc

I have a funding opportunity for a 4-year (typical duration in Singapore) PhD position on meta-learning for training data selection. The research aims to develop simple, practical, and scalable methods guided by mathematical insights and verified by realistic use cases. To get a taste of the research direction, take a look at our recent oral paper at ICML 2026: boyangli.org/paper/Zilin-Du-…
Ideal candidates have strong neural network engineering skills and a solid mathematical background (e.g., differential equations, probability, optimization). A publication involving some mathematical content and a master’s degree would be advantages, though not strictly required.
Please send your resume and transcripts to my email (which I am sure you can find). This ad expires on Nov 30, 2026.
I'm moving to Nanyang Technological University in Singapore to start a new lab! We'll still be dedicated to adversarial QA, human-computer collaboration, probabilistic modeling, and the other fun hijinx my students and I have been up to, but now (hopefully)
bigger and better.
I've been connected to the University of Maryland in one way or another since 2009, and that's not going to change with this move. I still have students I remain committed to graduating, and I hope to remain involved with my long-time collaborators.
I'm agressively recruiting students and postdocs for 2027. I've tried to outline everything on my openings page, including a university-level postdoc with a deadline in October (but info sessions next week):

📚 From AI evaluation and autonomous driving to Ramsey theory, 27 undergraduates spent the summer investigating open research questions at @UofMaryland's CS Dept.
Selected from 400 applicants, the students worked across seven research teams.
