The appointment of Sarah Mullally as Archbishop of Canterbury was deeply disappointing. Her positions on abortion, same-sex unions and women’s ordination reflect how far parts of the Church of England have drifted.
But Anglicans need to remember something important: the Archbishop of Canterbury is not an Anglican Pope.
Anglicanism does not stand or fall with one bishop. Christ is the Head of the Church. The Archbishop of Canterbury is a focus of unity, not an infallible ruler over every Anglican province, diocese and parish.
Article XIX itself reminds us that churches can err. Rome has erred. Jerusalem, Alexandria and Antioch have erred. The Church of England can err too. Error does not automatically mean the Church has ceased to be the Church.
There are still faithful bishops, priests and parishes. There are still Anglicans holding firmly to Scripture, the historic Creeds, the Thirty-Nine Articles and the Gospel.
The answer is not panic or abandonment. It is to remain, resist error, support orthodox clergy, defend the faith and pray for reform.
Bad archbishops come and go. Christ remains.
The Church belongs to Him.

Orthodox are spot on. Pity much of the Western churches are too compromised to say the same.

This gormless cretin of an archbishop is the almost too-perfect face of the British state, in all its arrogance, self-righteousness and stupidity, as it gleefully destroys our country. I wish such people only ill.

The devil is looking for the tired, the distracted, the doubting — those trying to go it alone. Put on the full armor of God and stand firm and stand strong with other followers of Christ. (Ephesians 6:11). Stay faithful to the end, and cross the finish line.
