Wonderful.
Look down at your feet while walking anywhere in Japan:
At the crosswalk. On the subway stairs. Down an underground shopping mall.
Along a quiet residential sidewalk in the countryside.
You will see a continuous, bright yellow path of raised tiles.
Some have parallel ridges (walk forward).
Some have rounded bumps (stop and caution).
They are Tenji Blocks — tactile paving for the blind.
In 1965, a Japanese inventor named Seiichi Miyake was walking near an intersection.
He saw a visually impaired man with a white cane almost get struck by a car.
The man was terrified, tapping the concrete blindly.
Miyake was not a government official. He was not a billionaire.
He spent his own life savings to invent a concrete tile
that a cane and a shoe sole could instantly read.
In 1967, the world's very first tactile paving was laid in Okayama City.
Today, Japan has laid over one hundred thousand miles of continuous yellow paths.
A blind teenager can step out of their front door in a small town,
follow the yellow ridges to the train station,
transfer through Tokyo Station without asking for help,
and arrive at university with complete dignity and independence.
Many tourists think Japan’s greatest achievement is bullet trains or neon towers.
They are wrong.
The measure of a truly great civilization isn't how high its skyscrapers reach.
It is how far its sidewalk will stretch
to protect someone who cannot see.

I think this is a fantastic idea. If companies won't pay living wages then we take back the benefits we pay out to support their workers from the company's profits. Seems totally obvious. That'd cut the benefits bill big time.

The monarchist BBC obediently platforms this indulged imposter in order reinforce her position as 'Queen', when there's no need at all for such a documentary. Another deflection from #swansong. #abolishtheMonarchy
NEW - The Queen will speak about her late father’s autobiography in a BBC documentary, The Book That Changed My Life, next month. Today Camilla extolled the “life-enhancing power” of books at her Reading Room festival @ChatsworthHouse @EmilyPrescott30👇🏼

BREAKING: EU governments are now discussing an EU-wide windfall tax on energy companies, potentially 33% or more, as record fuel prices pile pressure on the EU to contain mounting public discontent, with Germany leading the push and demanding proposals by October.
Across the EU petrol is up 24% on the year, diesel 38%, jet fuel more than 100%, and benchmark gas 150% to €81 a megawatt hour. German diesel hit a record €2.47 a litre this week, Dutch diesel €2.78, and 11% of French stations are out of petrol or diesel this morning.
Europe’s energy crisis is getting worse.

A member of the House of Lords makes £7,420 a month frm the daily £371 attendance allowance. Yr average pensioner gets £964.00 a MONTH. In what world is that fair? Plus the first £30k for Lord is tax free. Not so if a pensioner somehow gets above £12,500. @jamesmelville
