Is there special input impinging on the axon-carrying dendrite? Interesting question, hopefully to be answered soon… 13/13

Our data imply that inhibition can induce rapid (millisecond) switches between two different functional networks: one comprising all cells and one exclusively made by AcD cells. 12/13

Simply put, perisomatic inhibition closes a gate for input coming from ‘normal’ dendrites such that only the axon-carrying dendrite remains functionally relevant. 11/13

AcD cells: Inhibition high: ‘low gain’, but inputs to the specialized dendritic branch are still able to elicit action potentials. 10/13

AcD cells: Inhibition low: no difference to nonAcD cells, ‘high gain’, easy generation of action potentials. 9/13

What is different in AcD cells? The basal dendrite that carries the axon effectively evades perisomatic inhibition, and thus the time window for action potential generation becomes much larger. 8/13

Inhibition high: ‘low gain’, no action potentials possible. 7/13

Thus, they define rhythmic ‘windows of opportunity’ for action potential generation. Inhibition low: ‘high gain’, easy generation of action potentials. 6/13

A classical view of perisomatic inhibition: rhythmic activity of perisomatically targeting inhibitory neurons plays a key role in oscillations. They synchronously inhibit the soma of pyramidal cells where excitatory inputs are integrated. 5/13

We now show that excitatory inputs to this privileged dendrite evade perisomatic inhibition and can generate action potentials when all other inputs are shunted. Thus, perisomatic inhibition is not simply a ‘gain control’ but ‘gates’ information flow in AcD cells. 4/13

We had previously shown that up to 50% of hippocampal pyramidal cells have an axon emerging from a basal dendrite (sciencedirect.com/science/ar…). 3/13

Thrilled that our study on the role of inhibition in hippocampal coding is out in @CellReports! With @acnavasolive, who worked with me here in NY last summer, and including some exciting observations with @LMPrida🧵(1/12) cell.com/cell-reports/fullte…

Delighted to share our new paper on high-resolution optogenetics to probe subthreshold dynamics and to unmask place fields! Huge thanks to the co-authors, my family in the Buzsáki lab, and colleges. Here’s is a thread to save you the 10 min it takes to read a @Science paper 😊

We show that enriched environment changes excitation/inhibition ratio in CA1 pyramidal cells. As a consequence, firing precision during sharp wave-ripple complexes is reduced.
