Saw this tweet after reading @TwoPaddocks's book. Coincidence? Painful story, fantastic book.
This photograph, captured between 1885 and 1886, features Ella Harper.
Harper was afflicted with an extremely rare medical condition known as congenital genu recurvatum, causing her knees to bend in the opposite direction. Consequently, she found it more comfortable to move on all fours.
In 1886, Harper took on the role of a performer in a circus. Her earnings were reported to be $200 a week, an amount equivalent to over $6,500 in today's money.
The pitch card - a bio card circulated among circus spectators - included the following details about her:
"I am called the camel girl because my knees turn backward. I can walk best on my hands and feet as you see me in the picture. I have traveled considerably in the show business for the past four years and now, this is 1886 and I intend to quit the show business and go to school and fit myself for another occupation."
