A shame homes aren't an essential byproduct anyone needs, I guess we'll discard them to assist the many who are selflessly boycotting greedy accommodation proposals.😶🌫️

ALT 40 home proposal (25% affordable apartments), planning says "IT'S SO OUT-OF-SCALE WITH THE STREET CONTEXT!" 10 home proposal with height cut down "YES, A GOOD SETBACK WILL HIDE THAT MANY UNITS." "BUT YOU COULD STILL SEE HOW PASTICHE IT LOOKS." 3 home proposal ($1.2 million each now) "IT SHOULD BLEND IN WITH THE HERITAGE ARTICULATION." people looking on at a closed building for sale again ($3M) "WHY CAN'T WE MAKE NICE THINGS ANYMORE?" cartoon thing based on a thing in hobart / nipaluna #politas #lgtas
This is what I expect when I hear 'national infrastructure priority project' for Australia's capital city to have rail better than the 1890s
pictured: place that has continued restricting new homes so has somehow managed to keep prices rising
why do we always have to be behind on everything, can't we be ahead of the curve in something good?
the thing: oh no --you skipped some steps
Australian academic housing research:
- Often asks bad questions
- Generally does a bad job of answering those questions
- Regularly misrepresents its own findings
For such an important topic, this is v bad!
@jonobri and @hillfolkAU reckon @AHURI_Research is a big reason why.

Auckland allowed higher density housing and this reduced rent 23% relative to other NZ cities.
@jonobri discusses how they did it.

Australia isn't yet willing to have the conversation that cars don't have to be capable of being used as weapons, intentional or unintentional.
Underrated factor in Australian isolation/cohesion discourse is how we once used planning (a regulatory tool perfected in the US for…racial segregation) to disperse away poverty that was concentrated/associated w/ affordable places close to work/community (think Surry Hills)
and the feds should fast-track the track that connects federal public servants, the Lodge, Parliament, that >$1b-biggest-fed-investment-since-1988-thing and also canberra
Why is it that aesthetics/character rules in Australia seem almost exclusively to preserve ugliness (or otherwise soul-crushing pedestrian experience) or to force any proposal to redesign as ugly as possible (like setbacks) in a 5d chess attempt to elicit hatred for change
We brought in Californian pines, they sent in Australian gums (little did they know, this was setting up the terrain for conquest)

One key point from our modelling, other research, and some fairly basic economic reasoning: the meme that “zoning reform doesn’t work because construction costs are too high” is simply not true in our major cities if you cut restrictions enough.
