2.9% + $0.30 sounds reasonable, right? But your actual number all-in: 7%.
7% seems to be the going-rate for allowing startups to operate. It’s the rate to get access to investors via an accelerator. It’s also become the rate to simply transact.
Here’s the math taken from a real-world example:
Real company example doing $250,000 / month with $25 average ticket size.
Card processing fees
- 2.9% = $7,250
- 30¢ × 10K charges = $3,000
- Intl/FX surcharges = $1,500
$11,750 all-in, 4.7% effective rate
Disputes: $3,000
200 a month (2% dispute rate) at $15
14% win rate so $4,300 more in revenue claws back
Billing/Subscriptions Platform Fee:
$1,750 (0.7% of every recurring charge)
Other:
$250
Total: $16,750/month.
That’s OVER $200,000 PER YEAR IN FEES.
Interchange is what every processor needs to pay their underlying bank and card networks. This is typically 2%.
So… the processor's profit margin: 71% (or 5% on an absolute basis)
Bolt's profit margin is only about 1% on an absolute basis. That’s an 80% reduction.
100% off of billing fees (it’s free)
100% of fees returned on refunds
66.6% off of chargeback fees
~60% off of the payment margin.

I am thrilled to share that we've promoted @HaydenMcternan to @Bolt's VP of Sales. Many Bolters will recognize his name as Hayden was one of our pivotal AEs who took us from $1m to $40m ARR. Hayden left upon my departure and rejoined on my return. Perhaps the best sales leader I've worked with, he is a warrior, hyper-intelligent, and able to find the win-win in every deal. Bolt will be a powerhouse once again under his leadership ⚡️💪
Anyone ready for a lower-cost, higher-converting, and founder-first payments partner, shoot him a note right now! hmcternan@boltapp [dot] com

After firing his own HR team, Ryan Breslow tells Celia Walden why he believes workplace ‘entitlement’, complaining and ‘work theatre’ are holding companies back – and why he thinks common sense should take HR’s place.

Branded an "anti-woke hero", Ryan Breslow warns that entitled employees who have abandoned common sense will be the death of every company
“Listen, HR wields a lot of power in an organisation, and some people can wield power judiciously, of course. But when you have unqualified people holding a lot of that power...”

Bolt has hit a major financial milestone. For the first time since inception, Bolt has achieved profitability.
Last month, Bolt’s gross profits hit an all-time high while OPEX reached a record low.
Bolt has been doubling down on decisions that emphasize long-term profitability and market share capture. We have been investing heavily in our checkout, payments, and 1-click platform, which allow us to compete with $100b+ incumbents and win deals on a consistent basis.
We are winning deals on cost, conversion, and customer support.
We’ve also launched over 20 new product lines that have expanded our portfolio of fee capture, increased stickiness with customers, and improved customer satisfaction.
We have not been afraid to make the hard strategic decisions on reorganizing our teams. For instance, we have eliminated our Account Management and Implementation Management teams entirely. Now, sales reps manage customer relationships from beginning to end, and their only counterparts are highly technical engineers. No other non-technical middlemen. Our customers say the attention they’ve received is 10x what it has been historically, and the team has never felt more empowered and motivated.
These tough decisions have allowed us to cut OPEX considerably while driving record levels of revenue. Our integrations queue is currently filled to the brim.
If you process payments digitally and are looking to level up, please reach out.
Go Bolt.

Here is my full Fortune Workplace Summit keynote. It takes only 8 minutes to watch at 2x speed.
I believe that people ops is the way to go because it puts customers and employees first, better aligning with business priorities that keep the company moving forward.
Bolt would not be standing today if it weren’t for an extremely lean, efficient, business-oriented people operations team. This shift was a crucial one for our business, and I believe many businesses can benefit from making a similar change.

JUST IN: Bolt CEO Ryan Breslow fired the company’s entire HR team because they were “creating problems that didn’t exist.”

We didn’t have “HR” when building Palantir, for similar reasons - I avoided Ryan’s mistake.
And when we needed some PeopleOps, we hired technical leaders.
Going into the vast majority of companies and firing most of their HR and Marketing departments would tend to create value!

I can confirm. We did get rid of our HR team. Anyone who loves creating problems vs solving them has no place at a startup. Bolt is now operating once again as a startup and at Lightning Speed. Thank you Fortune for having me as your keynote speaker ⚡️
"We got rid of our HR team.”
Bolt CEO Ryan Breslow defended sweeping workforce cuts at Bolt—including a recent layoff affecting roughly 30% of employees—as well as his decision to eliminate the company’s HR team.
