Take a moment to look at the inhumanity captured in this extraordinary photo running on the front page of tonight's Minneapolis @StarTribune. It shows federal immigration agents immobilizing a protester on the ground and spraying chemical irritant directly into his face. The scene reminds me of the brutality used against civil rights protesters in the 1960s. We look back at those old photos and wonder how the authorities could have behaved so savagely; many years from now, young Americans will look at these photos from 2026 and wonder how anyone could have justified shooting a woman in the head as she tried to drive away, arresting 5-year-old schoolchildren on the street, or holding a man down and spaying chemicals into his face. Thanks to the Star Tribune reporters and photographers for documenting this work; they create accountability, they make democracy work, and they make all of us in journalism proud.

Utterly obscene. I disagreed strongly with her op-ed, but there is absolutely no justification for this arrest. None.
A judge has unsealed the memo ordering the detention & deportation of Rümeysa Öztürk. It confirms the sole evidence against her was that she co-wrote an op-ed the government disliked. Here she is being arrested by men in plainclothes. Over an op-ed.

The Trump administration claims that Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse, was armed and a threat when agents shot him in the back and killed him. In fact, as best we can tell at this stage from the multiple videos, he was: a.) a Good Samaritan trying to help a small woman with a backpack whom agents had thrown to the ground and pepper sprayed; b.) unarmed, his legally licensed weapon already having been removed by another agent and taken away from the scene seconds earlier; c.) on his knees, pinned by agents and no threat to anyone at the moment two agents shot him approximately ten times in the back. As with Renee Good, it's disgusting not only that the authorities execute a person in cold blood but also that they lie about it to defame their victim and then block an investigation by local police that might establish the facts.

The process to negotiate a plastic pollution treaty will resume in Geneva in August. How might negotiators bridge their differences in order to reach agreement? Sue Biniaz, @mivanova , and I survey some of the options in a new piece on @just_security . shorturl.at/cVOJX

In this new piece for @illuminemNews, @mivanova and I assess the state-of-play in the UNEP plastics negotiations and suggest a way forward, involving what we call a modular approach. bit.ly/PlasticsAgreement

Here at the plastics negotiations in Busan, its procedure uber alles. The opening day of INC-5 was almost entirely consumed with the issue of whether to use the co-chairs' "non-paper" or the so-called "consolidated text" as the starting point for negotiations this week.

Today, in considering the "Objectives" article, almost an hour spent on whether to have a conceptual discussion or engage in textual negotiations.

Suprised to see how little media attention @ChadM_Baum et al. received. A massive public perception study finds the Global South is far more supportive of SRM research than the Global North, challenging widely held assumptions. Media:🦗🦗🦗 nature.com/articles/s41467-0…
