Queer stories have been a vital part of the Sundance Film Festival from the very beginning — embraced for their originality, vision, and power. 🌈 With 400+ LGBTQ+ titles, explore the legacy that continues to inspire this #PrideMonth on @Letterboxd. boxd.it/cipI8
On this day in 1993, Bob Hawk sat in an empty theater to watch a movie titled CLERKS by an unknown filmmaker named @ThatKevinSmith.
Bob Hawk & Kevin Smith (and co-director JJ Garvine) at the Film Hawk screening at Smodcastle cinemas —- ONE YEAR ago today.
Bob & I passed this theater in Englewood, NJ yesterday. It closed for COVID and never reopened. The posters for The Way Back and Onward are still hanging up from the week the lockdown started. Frozen in time.

Seeing Shooting Clerks yesterday at @SmodCinemas reminded me of the ‘Kevin Smith Double Feature’ of SC & Film Hawk at the 2016 Orlando Film Festival.
Film Hawk was spotted at @vidiots L.A.'s legendary hip video store, home of cool indie films & people.

This makes me sad.
However, a correction:
CLERKS *never* raised any money at the IFFM. I paid for a slot and we debuted the same completed $27,575 16mm print at the @AngelikaFilmNY screening that was shown at Sundance 3 months later.
What *did* happen for us at our nearly-empty 10/3/93 screening at 11am was that the legendary @RobertHawk2 showed up to see a film represented by a murky, amateurish photo in the catalogue. Then he told the world about our little flick. So what we got from the IFFM was far better than money: we found a hero.

The Gotham has canceled this year’s project market (formerly the Independent Feature Market), where everything from CLERK to MOONLIGHT raised funds, and laid off two staffers including longtime Gotham Awards overseer Milton Tabbot: indiewire.com/news/analysis/…
