Another clue. List seats are allocated by the Saints-Laguë iterative formula. Not by adding % together. SL is an updated version of the Jefferson / D’Hondt method (yes that Jefferson). D’hondt favours larger parties & works better with 2 parties. SL is basically size neutral.
The whole playing games with MMP thing demonstrates why several generations of kiwis are terrible at maths. If you want a national govt, party vote national. If you want a Labour govt; party vote labours Greens govt, party vote green.

Our royal commission into voting systems picked the Sainte-Laguë method because it produces the most proportional results relative to votes. It also is a very very difficult iterative formula to game, unlike the D’Hondt / Jefferson formula.

I really hope we don’t do this in NZ. So many reasons a home may be empty. If any govt wants more affordable housing, build more state houses. Lots of vacant land lots they can purchase and build. That will drive down rent. Policy’s like this add uncertainty, not solutions.
It’s not a silver bullet but bringing more empty homes back into use can help solve the housing crisis. Today, we’re announcing strengthened powers for councils to take control of long-term empty homes and use them to house families in need.

Best investment any govt can make is in education. In terms of taxation, we get far more back from young educated taxpayers than we pay in. Incentivising more educated kiwis to stay in NZ is a good thing for NZ’s long term outlook.
NEW: Labour announced it would write off 10% of the value of student loans for students who stay in NZ for at least three years (and didn't benefit from fees-free). If loans are less than $2k in value they would be written off. Party says it will cost $583m.

Love it when CEO’s come out with total bullshit to try keep their share price high. Pretty sure knowing basic arithmetic & the order of operations (BEDMAS) will still be required.
JUST IN: Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang declares children won't need to learn basic math skills in the AI era.

Currently debugging an issue in a C code base. Really makes me appreciate Rust’s syntax & the Rust compiler. Even with AI assistance this cleanup job is painful. The further I go; the more memory leaks & hastily built functions I find. Sadly can’t rewrite the project to rust.

These fake news articles, generated by AI & paid to boost are dangerous. Can easily see how someone could think it was an actual news article about an actual event.

KDE bringing out a fight club policy is fantastic. The first rule of LLM usage is you don’t talk about LLM usage.
KDE is working on an official AI / LLM policy, and it reads like the rules of Fight Club. In short, KDE’s AI policy: 1) Encourages using AI, as long as a human is kept “in the loop”. 2) But you can’t tell anyone that you used AI. “Don’t disclose LLM usage”. “Don’t add ‘Assisted-by: [some LLM]” (as is done in the Linux kernel). “Nobody in KDE should know if you use an LLM”. In other words: “Welcome to developing KDE with AI. The first rule of developing KDE with AI is: you do not talk about developing KDE with AI.” invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma…

Love the bit about requiring people to take responsibility for their code and not use “the AI wrote it” as a reason for any issues.

Anyone want to place bets on this being the only oil shock in the next 5 years? The only way out of this is the electrification of NZ’s economy.
Diesel cracks 3 bucks.

Geek dream home setup.
Our house in Toronto had this fancy glassed wine cellar, but we are not big wine drinkers. Anyways, it had good climate control so here is my rack cellar.

Very honest appraisal of America atm. Shame America still has a sexism problem.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say again, if we’d elected the black lady and all she did was lock herself in the Oval Office, drink wine all day and watch Judge Judy reruns, this country would be still be 100% better off than it is right now. What a fucking disaster.

Iran says the Strait of Hormuz won’t open until Donald Trump & Benjamin Netanyahu leave power…. Feel most of Americans will find these terms acceptable.

Reasonable chance this energy crises turns into a financial crisis, especially if the US restricts diesel exports. Ironically the saving grace for markets may be the AI bubble popping & releasing capital.
The US is considering halting diesel exports. The US is the world's largest diesel exporter... Russia, the 2nd largest, has already halted exports. A US export ban would send global diesel prices even higher and force countries like Japan to dump USTs to fund their domestic needs. In other words, imposing an export ban on diesel would blow up the UST market. There are no easy solutions anymore. We don't own enough hard assets for what's coming.

Hello, I’m the CEO of a AI lab that isn’t profitable & is burning investor capital at a significant rate. Token for token I can’t compete against open source models. So let’s try use over regulation to kill my competition & save my company’s business model.
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so. Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training. This vindicates my choice not use Open AI for work or personal projects. It seems Open AI almost certainly used Levent Alpöge and Tristan Buckmaster's Codex Inference data in their model training. If you steal years of others work, not hard to quickly get the same result.
Replying to @sama
What about you threatening them?
