ALT In 2014, the Gaffney family of Arklow lost Raymond after his brave battle with a rare form of leukaemia. A year later, his family decided to do something special in his memory. They organised a collection in Arklow, received incredible support from the wider Wicklow community, and Raymond's brother 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝘆 𝗚𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗻𝗲𝘆 organised a night of 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗱𝘆 𝗮𝘁 The Sugar Club 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻. Together, they raised an incredible €𝟯,𝟴𝟬𝟵 for the Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust [BMLT] . In August 2015, Andy presented the funds to Margaret Sheen of BMLT. The family hoped the fundraiser would become an annual event, a way of remembering Raymond while helping other families facing leukaemia. 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆. ALT In 𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟰, Mary Cullen and her husband Pat held a dinner dance in Roundwood to raise funds for the Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust. Around 𝟲𝟬𝟬 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴, and a fundraising journey that would last 25 years began. After Pat sadly passed away, Mary continued the work in his memory, organising fundraising events, bringing her community together and creating the 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝟮𝟱𝗞 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸. By 2009, Mary had spent a quarter of a century fundraising for BMLT and was preparing for her final event: a charity ball at Killiney Castle. That year alone, the Roundwood Challenge raised €𝟮𝟱,𝟬𝟬𝟬, with the final event expected to take Mary's total beyond an incredible €𝟭 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝟮𝟱 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙙𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣. ALT c.2006, long-time BMLT fundraiser Ken Byrne brought a very special night of entertainment to one of Dublin's most iconic venues, the Olympia Theatre! Ken arranged a show featuring Kevin Doyle, performing an Elvis tribute, and initially expected to pay the Olympia several thousand euro for the venue. But then something unexpected happened. The show had to be moved because of a double-booking, and Ken went back to the Olympia manager to protest. Instead of charging him for the replacement night, the venue gave him the night for free. That change made an extraordinary difference. According to Ken's account in a 2011 research interview, the show raised about €40,000 on that one night alone for the Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust. And that's what makes this such a great BMLT story, a problem with a booking turned into an opportunity that generated an incredible amount of support for patients and families.

ALT CAR-T cell therapy is one of the most exciting developments in modern blood cancer treatment. But what exactly is CAR-T? How does it work? Who can receive it? And what does the future hold? We’ve created a new page on the Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust website to explain CAR-T therapy in simple terms, from how a patient’s own T-cells are collected and re-engineered, to how they are returned to the body to help recognise and fight cancer cells.

ALT Haematological cancers are cancers that affect the blood, bone marrow or lymphatic system. They include leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, as well as a number of less common blood cancers and disorders. A diagnosis of blood cancer can be overwhelming for patients and their families. Treatment can involve specialist care, lengthy hospital stays and, for some patients, stem cell transplantation or other advanced therapies. At Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust (BMLT), we understand the challenges that come with a blood cancer diagnosis. For more than 40 years, we have supported patients and families receiving specialist care, helping to provide practical support, accommodation, equipment, research and services that make a real difference throughout their treatment journey.
