ALT On October 25, 2024, the Regional Supervising Coroner of the East Region, Ottawa Office, announced that a date has been scheduled for the inquest into the death of Abdirahman Abdi. The inquest began on November 18, 2024. We demand justice for Abdirahman Abdi. Swipe to learn more.

ALT Abdirahman Abdi died on July 25, 2016 after being arrested and assaulted by the Ottawa Police Service on July 24, 2016. Toronto and Ottawa-based organizers protested Abdirahman’s death in 2016 - calling for an inquest, justice, and accountability.

ALT In October of 2020, the OPS officer responsible for the arrest was acquitted of all criminal charges related to Abdirahman Abdi’s death. Const. Daniel Montsion was found not guilty of manslaughter, aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.

ALT Once again, community organizers took to the street in protest of this blatant miscarriage of justice. The Justice for Abdirahman Coalition, organized an action that brought together community members across the country. They advocated for an end to anti-Black racism, a deeper understanding of Black mental health, and divestment of police funds towards communities of color.

ALT CLIMATE JUSTICE IS RACIAL JUSTICE

ALT Climate Justice is Racial Justice. Anti-Blackness and colonization undermines our well-being and over-determines our social relations by arranging hierarchies that structure our lives. Systemically marginalized communities feel the biggest impacts of the climate crisis.

ALT Climate change has had significant international impacts on Black communities across the diaspora. Most recently, Hurricane Beryl has devastated islands across the Caribbean. These hurricanes have left families displaced, crops destroyed, and houses demolished. Fossil fuel emissions have been linked to the warming sea temperatures that have so drastically escalated the scale of this environmental disaster.

ALT Access to clean water remains unequal and fossil fuel and other extractive industries remain unregulated, across so-called Canada and abroad. Indigenous lands, here and everywhere, are under attack due to imperialism and white supremacy.

ALT Palestinians and allies around the world have attempted a number of strategies while struggling toward freedom. Marathons, film festivals, and international movements like Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions are few of many initiatives anchored by a commitment to humanizing Palestinians. These peaceful strategies are rarely reported on in Western media, and allies' activities are often met with vitriol in the West, creating a culture of fear around supporting Palestinians.

ALT We know that the state of Israel's recent retaliations are illegal under international law, full stop. The complete siege of water, food, fuel and electricity is a violation of international human rights, and so is their use of white phosphorus munition. As always, Israeli state tactics deployed toward Palestine have been met with little to no retribution from the international community.

ALT South African leaders, including the late Winnie Mandela, liken Israel's treatment of Palestinians to their own history of apartheid. In Africa and across the diaspora, Black people have learned that while the path toward decolonization may seem bleak, struggling toward freedom is critical.

ALT BLMCA calls on Canada to: • Denounce Israeli apartheid, and its ongoing international human rights violations; • Call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza; • Defund its record-breaking military arms exports to Israel; and • Support Palestinian livelihood.
