“ no one knows, bell. aside from you and the cia, of course. but . . . thank you. ” adler pulled the photograph from the desk and slid it into one of the pull out cabinet and closed it. “ did you need anything else ? ”
Replying to @pavlovsbell_
before. right? not like it was any of bell's business, anyway. he set the photo down with a nod, sliding it back toward adler. “it's a lovely photo, adler.”

adler glanced to the side, letting out a low sigh. he tapped a finger against the wood of the desk before leaning back in his chair. “ that’s an old photograph of my child and i. a few days after my birthday and valentine’s day. can’t . . recall the year, but my guess ? —
he hesitated for a moment, preparing himself for what may potentially be on the other side of the photo. he carefully lifted the picture, flipping it over to look at it. his expression turned from worry to confusion, and his head tilted. “who— who's this?”

1960 . . 2? perhaps 1963. it’s nothing, bell. like i said, i’m alright. ”

his jaw clenched, bringing a hand up to push his aviators up to allow his index and thumb to squeeze at the bridge of his nose. he wasn’t frustrated — just exhausted. a lingering feeling that seemed to never stop. “ i know, bell. i . . . know. ” —
a frown curved bell's lips. he hated to doubt adler, but he didn't seem alright. there was something much more solemn about adler's demeanor. “sir, i hate to pry, but... are you sure? you can... you can always talk to me.”

adler muttered softly before lowering his hand. a long pause drifted between them before his hand hesitantly slid the photo closer to bell. it was a silent invitation — to either look or not. he couldn’t seem to vocalize it any further, untrusting of his voice right now.

with a slow blink, adler adjusted against his desk chair, the vinyl material creaking beneath him. he cleared his throat and set the photograph face down against the worn wood. “ it’s nothing, bell. you don’t need to worry about that. i’m . . . alright. ”
bell takes a seat across from adler, head tilted. he doesn't peek at the picture, simply staring at the back of it. “what's that?”

an old photograph clutched between his hand with smudged & faded text, the date is labeled 02 / 17 / 19█. half of the year has been burned off & with an aching heart, he cannot recall it.

“ Дорогая, я прекрасно понимаю. В своё время я получу от тебя то, что мне нужно. Если ты будешь сопротивляться, тебе будет ещё больнее. ” adler angled the syringe at the russian’s neck, before piercing it slowly into the skin. his thumb raised and pressed against the injector —
vladimir let a small sound fall from his lips — pained, as his hair is tugged. he breathes shakily, a sharp swallow following. “you’re out of your mind. i see why they kicked you to the curb.” he mutters, “you’ll get nothing from me.”

“ kill you ? ” adler tilted his head, turning towards the other. the syringe stayed within his grasp, his middle finger flickering against it to clear the air bubbles. he leaned down a bit, before shaking his head slightly. “ wrong again. i’m not here to kill you —
Replying to @BURNEDTHRONE
gaining enough strength, he gives a low last few words — “you can’t kill me in a way that matters. have at it.”

i’m careful about what i do. i might be reckless, but i wouldn’t kill you. that’s not my intention. ” adler straightened himself up, and let his other hand bury into makarov’s hair only to give a firm tug backwards. “ i told you. i want to learn directly from the source —
