DII-AAA football has been all the talk lately, with much of the discussion centered around competitive imbalance and player safety. A graphic was recently posted showing the number of P4 recruits by school, and it certainly showed some disparity. But to us, a broader measure of overall talent is how many players on these rosters have actually signed with or committed to Division I programs—FBS or FCS. The numbers are interesting. There’s clearly a concentration of D1 talent at the top of DII-AAA. But if a new league is formed, there also appears to be a significant talent gap within that group. That raises an interesting question: if competitive imbalance is one of the concerns driving change today, how will it be measured in a new league? And if one program eventually develops a significant talent advantage over the others, what happens then? Does that become the same competitive-balance and player-safety concern? It’s an interesting discussion as Tennessee private-school football considers what comes next. ⬇️
