On this day in 1938, Martians invaded New Jersey. At least that's what the radio said.
At 8 p.m. Eastern, Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre on the Air performed "The War of the Worlds" on CBS, told as breaking news bulletins about an alien landing in Grovers Mill, N.J. The next morning, newspapers across the country reported a nationwide panic.
Here's the part most people never hear. Historians now say the panic was greatly exaggerated. A C.E. Hooper ratings survey of 5,000 households that night found just 2% were listening to the play. Newspapers, which had been losing ad money to radio during the Depression, ran with the scariest stories they could find. Within three weeks they had published at least 12,500 articles about it.
So the bigger hoax may have been the coverage of the hoax. Eighty-eight years later, I still check before I share. Do you?

Rome conquered with armies. Christians won hearts by caring for the people Rome could afford to lose.
The faith had no political power when plague swept the empire in AD 165 and again in 251. While many fled the cities, many Christians stayed behind to nurse the sick, including neighbors who didn't share their faith.
Picture lying in a Roman city burning with fever, watching the people you counted on walk out, and the people your culture called strange walk in with water.
What makes someone risk dying for a neighbor who doesn't even share his faith?
When we talk about preserving Christian civilization, the faith we want to defend has to be a faith people can see us living.
Would someone watching our lives today understand what drew so many Romans to theirs?

Rest in peace, Sir Patrick Stewart, who passed away today at the age of 86. Perhaps best known for his iconic role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Stewart spent the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown sharing videos of himself reading Shakespeare’s sonnets. Notably, he was once joined by his neighbor’s cat Glenn who appeared unimpressed by Sonnet 40.

Equatorial Guinea’s president was thanking Vladimir Putin for helping keep his country safe when Russian television broadcasts in Tula were suddenly interrupted by an air-raid warning.
One moment, viewers were watching a foreign leader praise the Kremlin’s security guarantees. The next, they were being warned about a potential threat to their own region.
Similar interruptions have occurred during Russia 24 broadcasts in Yaroslavl and Kursk, another reminder of how deeply the war has reached into everyday life inside Russia.
Meanwhile, more than 50 air-defense positions have been identified around Putin’s Valdai residence, illustrating the extraordinary resources devoted to protecting the Russian president.
The contrast is difficult to miss.
Putin presents himself internationally as a guarantor of security, yet Russians increasingly live with the possibility of drone attacks and emergency warnings.
And on this occasion, the contradiction played out on national television, right in the middle of a speech praising him for keeping another country safe.

In 2002, the state of Washington told Lydia Fairchild she was not the mother of the children she had carried and raised.
She was 26, pregnant with her third, and had recently separated from their father, Jamie Townsend. When she applied for public assistance, DNA testing was routine. The results confirmed Townsend as the father. They found no genetic connection between Fairchild and any of the children. The lab repeated the test. The outcome did not change.
Prosecutors began discussing welfare fraud. They raised the possibility that she had been a surrogate who kept the babies or had obtained the children by other means. They mentioned a polygraph.
She said she would take one. Instead the state issued a court summons and moved toward removing the children from her care.
When she went into labor with the third child, a court officer stood in the delivery room to witness the birth and supervise the blood draw.
The sample was taken from the newborn minutes after delivery, in the presence of a witness, so the chain of custody would be beyond dispute. Two weeks later the result came back: no match.
Her attorney, Alan Tindell, had read a case published that May in the New England Journal of Medicine. A 52-year-old Boston woman named Karen Keegan had needed a kidney transplant.
Two of her three sons did not match her DNA when tested as potential donors. Researchers later found a second genetic profile in her thyroid tissue. Tindell brought the paper into court and argued that his client might be the same rare biological phenomenon.
Investigators tested Fairchild’s parents, then sampled her skin and hair. Finally they tested a cervical smear. Those cells matched the children.
Fairchild is a chimera. Early in her mother’s pregnancy, two fertilized eggs that would have become fraternal twins fused into a single embryo.
She developed as one person carrying two distinct sets of DNA. Most of her body operates on one lineage. Her reproductive tissue operates on the other—the lineage she passed to her children.
The charges were dropped. She kept her children.
The case remains one of the clearest documented examples of tetragametic chimerism, a condition that can make a mother appear genetically unrelated to the children she gave birth to, until the right tissue is tested. 🌹
