People assume that deep knowledge of a source text is a great advantage when trying to assess its film adaptation. I’d argue it’s often a disadvantage, because you’re unable to see the movie for what it is. This actually happened to me years ago with Scorsese’s THE AGE OF INNOCENCE, which I really didn’t like when it first came out. (I love it now.)
