Zack Polanski, "What I see over and over again is politicians say they support a two state solution, and that's fine, other than, Benjamin Netanyahu has made it very clear that he doesn't support a two state solution"
Laura Kuenssberg, "Do you support a two state solution?"
Zack Polanski, "I support whatever the Israelis and Palestinians need to be able to live side by side with equal rights"
"But I think the idea of a two state solution is for the birds, when we've got so many people running to be prime minister of Israel in the October election, who are saying that they don't support that either"
"So if this Labour government want a two state solution, my question is, what are you doing to make that happen?"
"Because the status quo right now is a one state apartheid state where Palestinians do not have the same freedoms as Israelis"
"And to come back to your first question, that's racist"
My view:
Polanski is right to challenge the gap between the promise and the reality. Netanyahu has explicitly rejected the creation of a Palestinian state, and the main Israeli opposition has not offered a clear commitment to one either.
The question is not merely whether foreign politicians endorse a two-state solution in theory, but how they respond when influential Israeli leaders reject it and settlement expansion continues to make it harder to achieve.
That does not mean a two-state solution is meaningless or should be abandoned. It remains one possible way for Israelis and Palestinians to live with self-determination and security.
But invoking it while doing nothing about the conditions that undermine it risks turning a peace plan into a slogan.
If this is the government’s policy, it should say what steps it will take to protect the possibility of a Palestinian state and what consequences will follow if that possibility is further eroded.
Polanski calls the current system apartheid.
Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and the Israeli human-rights organisation B’Tselem have each concluded that Israeli authorities’ treatment of Palestinians meets the definition of apartheid.
Israel rejects that characterisation.
The underlying question still demands an answer: how can there be lasting peace while Palestinians live under restrictions and unequal rights, without the freedom and security Israelis expect for themselves?
Any vision of peace must include safety for both peoples. Israeli civilians must be able to live without the threat of attacks, rockets or hostage-taking. Palestinians must be able to live without occupation, displacement, bombardment or being denied equal rights and a political future.
Neither people’s safety can be built on the permanent insecurity of the other.
So the question for Labour is a fair one: if you support two states, what are you doing to make them possible?

I see the protests in France are trending.
Since I just spent 10 days there during the heart of them, I figured I'd chime in with what's actually going on.
The news and clickbait accounts on X will show you the outlier events: burning buildings, raging violence and everything that triggers you.
I was in the heart of Aix en Provence during the biggest protest day and filmed the center where it was happening. (See below)
This is right the University, across from the church, dead center of town.
The students are dancing, singing, kicking soccer balls and have comically barricaded the entrance doors to force the school to close.
I visited many cities in France during the protest period, and saw zero violence or malpractice of any kind.
More broadly, I spent more than a month this year in France across 3 trips and 10+ cities, including Paris, Bordeaux, Aix en Provence, Nice, Antibes, Biarritz, and others, and it's incredibly safe, charming, peaceful and beautiful.
Every city I visited is nicer than almost every American city, and there's zero comparison.
So much that it wouldn't even be insulting to France to try, because nobody who has spent significant time in both countries would take this comparison seriously.
I spoke with the students at length about their views. I also spoke with waiters, drivers, merchants, staff and whoever.
They were all civil, well articulated and genuinely wanted to see change.
We can disagree about their reasoning, logic or whatever, and it's true that France has fiscal problems, but to chalk up the France protests to raging extremist violence from "pick your favorite group to blame", is a laughable misrepresentation of what's actually going on.
If you exclusively watch the news and believe the top 1% extreme situations, you have likely been psyoped.

Cui bono?
Who could benefit most from peaceful protests turning into riots?
Who could benefit most by sending the police in, batons flailing, with tear gas and stun grenades to escalate the situation?
Who could benefit most from scenes of shops being pillaged and buildings on fire?
Why are there so many clips of obvious police-protected agents provocateur? (and there have been all week)?
Who benefits from being able to go on the telly on a Sunday night and blame the Left?

There has never, in our lifetimes, been a genocidal ethnic cleansing campaign that the genocidal ethnic cleaners have so openly bragged about doing.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz on Lebanon:
Look at what is happening in Lebanon.
Today, more than 60 villages in southern Lebanon, beginning with those adjacent to the border, and beyond that, throughout the entire security zone up to the Yellow Line, an area of 700 square kilometers, are destroyed.
All the villages have been wiped out. Twenty-three thousand houses, all destroyed, demolished.
I am not even talking about what is underground, about the tunnels. Everything has been destroyed.
There are no residents there. Two hundred thousand residents are outside.
This is the Gaza model. And this is the model we are implementing.

Correct.
In Labour-right circles, "I support a two-state solution, but..." is their version of "I'm not racist, but..."
When organisations like Labour Friends of Israel invoke support for a two-state solution, it is a purely rhetorical device to head off accusations of anti-Palestinian racism, before they set out why it is impossible (and antisemitic) to do any of things that are required (like the sanctions and mandatory arms embargo that were applied to South Africa) to force Israel to accept Palestinian statehood and end the racist oppression of Palestinians.
Replying to @robertshrimsley
Neither solution is on the table. Neither is on the horizon. But only one is wheeled out by western politicians and pundits as a way to pretend they give a damn about the Palestinians and to deflect from their non action over a genocide in Gaza and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank, so that’s the one that gets critiqued the most.

Can anyone remember the last time @BBCNews interviewed a Palestinian about their experience of the racism of Zionism? Having spent the last two weeks interviewing elderly Nakba survivors in Jordan, driven off their land in their teens because of their ethnicity and religion, I'd be happy to suggest some astonishingly articulate victims of Israeli racism who would be only too happy to tell their tragic stories of eviction, slaughter and dispossession. It is like reporting on the Civil Rights movement in the US and only interviewing outraged Whites
