What's heartbreaking is the knowledge that fic writers will largely be deleting their fics when AO3 is restored after witnessing how poorly they are treated as a whole and how they are so grossly taken for granted. Another nail in the coffin of community.

Most people I know nowadays indulge in fandom between friends and in private, and it's plain to see why. As a community advocate in my personal and professional life, it's appalling to see this decline and know it will never reverse.

I just hope that those who have been passively and silently consuming fics finally understand how largely underappreciated writers are and take an extra second after reading to let writers know they enjoy their stories.

I've been banging this drum for years, but seeing how the AO3 outage affected a (to me) shocking number of people makes me wish this would highlight the importance of writing in fandom and an earnest desire for engagement from the fic community.

when fic writers say they miss the engagement they literally mean that one comment they randomly get that says "i stayed awake to unreasonable hours to finish this fic, that was the best thing i've read in months" that will give them motivation to write for the next weeks to come
