Applied distributed systems builder always on the lookout for good primitives. Work @Snowflake on Postgres via @crunchydata. Ex AWS. Opinions my own.

The Venn diagram of people worried AI will take all the jobs and burdening others with blindly copy and pasted LLM output is actually just a circle.

Fun AI moment: I use wine subregions as a naming scheme for NixOS machines. Qwen 27B picked up on it and named my new machine Chambertin.

I hope all the people building directly on S3 are going to love when AWS has colocated compute and storage for them but not for you.

The explosion in popularity of S3 native storage systems shows that write latency is not nearly as important as read throughput and read latency (via caches) for the vast majority of applications. It sure is fun to obsess over write latency graphs though!

Not gonna lie it feels dirty prompting Qwen 3.6 27B to update my nix configs to switch to Qwen 3.8 27B.

What we call skills and scripts seem reversed. Skills read like a script to follow and a script requires skill to write.

You should probably think twice about depending on services where the founders are openly learning basic computer science and distributed systems concepts in real time. The crypto to AI meme is real.

Had a nightmare where I made it to the million* dollar question on a game show and the final question was to pick the name of S3's low latency, single AZ product * my dreams do not account for inflation

I don’t believe in model training inertia but I do believe anyone starting a business based on it is starting a business in the status quo

What’s that word for fungible products with no discernible differences in quality across producers
Open-weight models have overtaken closed models on OpenRouter. 69.1% of token volume now goes to open-weight models. 30.9% to closed. Competition is a discovery procedure — and developers are discovering the value of open models. 🧵

AI psychosis is a euphemism for a person lacking respect for details of work they don't understand.

Most know that applications get coupled to the interface of their underlying database. Most do not know that applications also get coupled to the latency profile of their databases.
