RBI IN THE LAST 13 YEARS AGAINST CRYPTO:
24 Dec 2013: RBI issued its first public advisory warning users, holders, and traders of virtual currencies like Bitcoin
1 Feb 2017: RBI reiterated that it had neither licensed nor authorized any entity to deal in virtual currencies.
5 Dec 2017: RBI repeated its warning as Bitcoin prices surged globally
6 Apr 2018: RBI issued its most famous circular prohibiting regulated entities (banks, NBFCs, payment companies) from providing services to businesses or individuals dealing in virtual currencies.
4 Mar 2020: The Supreme Court of India struck down the 2018 circular, holding it disproportionate because the RBI had not demonstrated actual harm to regulated entities.
2021 onward: RBI continued to express concerns and repeatedly advocated caution, while clarifying that banks could not rely on the quashed 2018 circular to deny services solely because customers dealt in crypto.
2026: RBI has again argued internally for a policy "leaning towards prohibition," citing financial stability, monetary sovereignty and risks from privately issued crypto assets and stablecoins.
