We presented FreeCAD to the established manufacturing industry in Germany at Hannover Messe. While Matas from @bitbybit_dev showcased his product configurator, based on OpenCascade, I presented a fully open-source workflow for product development, including FreeCAD.

Got the parts today, glad to have made the decision to mark them with numbers, would be a total mess otherwise 😊 In terms of quality it’s quite ok for the first try, but the actual assembly will be the real test.

While waiting for the first prototype parts to arrive, I couldn’t help but dive into a new idea—a configurator for the Bitbybit line of phone holders ready made for laser-cutting! Users will be able to input basic dimensions and an angle. Plus, you’ll be able to engrave names 😊

All packed and ready to go! The design is laid out and nested quite efficiently. While there’s still a bit of unused space, I think it maximizes the material pretty well. Admittedly, I took a shortcut and imported a pre-made STEP file for the logo instead of coding it myself! 😅

Happy to hold the first physical test case in hand! I inspected the laser tolerances and gathered valuable insights—happy to see the design checks out so far. Next step: producing the first full prototype. Excited to keep moving forward!

🏭 When designing for manufacturing—accurate labeling is essential. This is particularly true for laser-cut components, where parts often look similar, making it easy to mix them up. Adding engraved part numbers prevents mistakes and streamlines the assembly process.

The script has grown, and so has the ambition (twice over 😉). I’ve implemented a small kerf compensation into the script and realized how convenient it is to have 2D parts laid out in the same space during programming. This approach helped avoid unnecessary self-intersections.
