This is so shockingly cruel I’m not sure I can look at the author of Catcher in the Rye the same way again.
As a contingency for marrying her, JD Salinger had his future wife drop out of college and burn all her own writings.
Then he gave her a copy of the short story Franny, which was based on her, as a wedding gift.

Once upon a time in colonial Madras, a young medical student walked into class wearing a swadeshi surgical apron made of hand-spun khadi, the cloth Gandhi had turned into a symbol of resistance to British goods. Years later, he gave the world chemotherapy.

Somewhere around 1930, on a sandy village road in Alappuzha, a woman rode a British motorcycle alone, sari hitched at her waist, while a crowd gathered on the roadside just to jeer. They called her Bullet Narayani. For almost a century afterward, everyone forgot her. 1/16

This is becoming common across our hill stations. How are they getting permission to build in the middle of the forest. VAO’s, Tahsildars, and registrars are highly corrupted in Tamil Nadu. Same thing is happening in Kodaikanal/Palani hills, Ooty/Nilgiris, Yercaud..etc. 😔

Gujarat cops (accompanied by Delhi police) came to journalist Ravi Nair’s home over a story he did with The Washington Post on Adani. An FIR has been lodged against Ravi, but not The Washington Post, based on a complaint by an Adani Group staffer.
The police took away two of Ravi’s phones, his son’s laptop, and the laptop and iPad of a colleague who happened to be at home and is not an accused in the case. The cops had a judicial magistrate’s order. Refused to give hash value of the devices

Prabhat Patnaik on Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam: “Even the British colonial government did not incarcerate prisoners without trial for such a long time. The infamous Rowlatt Act of 1919 provided for incarceration without trial for a maximum period of two years.”
This is just terrible.
95 years of hard-earned autonomy. Now under the scanner, this time the ISI
The Indian Statistical Institute (founded 1931 by P.C. Mahalanobis) is not just another campus. It is one of India’s rare institutions that was built on scientific independence, not bureaucratic control. The ISI Act of 1959 recognised it as an Institution of National Importance while preserving its society-based, faculty-driven character.
The new Indian Statistical Institute Bill, 2026 proposes to scrap that framework. It converts ISI into a statutory body corporate, replaces the representative Council with a government-appointed Board of Governors, and significantly curtails the role of the Academic Council. Faculty and the Institute’s own statutory bodies have publicly said this was done with zero meaningful consultation with them.
The government’s pitch is “modernisation” and alignment with IIT/IIM-style governance. Critics inside ISI argue the opposite: it concentrates power, reduces elected academic voice, and opens the door to external interference in academic decisions. They also note that the 4th Review Committee (Mashelkar) did not recommend repealing the 1959 Act or abolishing the Society structure.
This is not an abstract governance debate. Institutions that produce independent data, rigorous statistical research, and critical inquiry need structural insulation from short-term political or bureaucratic priorities. Once that insulation is thinned, it is hard to restore.
Academic freedom is not a slogan. It is the operating condition of any serious research institute. ISI faculty are right to raise the alarm.
Parliament should insist on genuine consultation with the Institute’s own bodies before rewriting a 95-year-old model that actually worked. Another Premier Institute being Saffronised and being brought under RSS Siege.

Please turn your eyes towards the famed Indian Statistical Institute, founded by the great PC Mahalanobis. For over 90 years, this pioneering institution has stood at the forefront of global economic and econometric research, producing stalwarts for many generations.
The Modi govt's proposed ISI Bill threatens to dismantle this legacy by replacing its representative Council with a government-appointed Board, effectively throttling its academic voice. It is nothing but a way to Saffronize this institution, and open the door for its ideological capture.
We're witnessing the collapse and dismantling of another institution, another brick that had propped up our founding fathers' vision for a modernized India, which was premised on the spirit of scientific inquiry.

Excellent from a former DGP of J&K and Manipur. Delhi Police had no leadership, no discipline and poor training. They behaved like a bunch of goons with sticks and tearhas shells against students, without any purpose, as he shows.
The Commissioner should have been sacked by now.
