Astonishing, isn’t it? Hundreds of Labour activists and voters whooping, cheering and holding posters emblazoned with HOPE AGAIN. Not prosper again. Not build again. Not earn more, live better, own a home, heat your house without constantly checking the meter and put a few quid away at the end of the month. No. Hope again. Hope is what you offer people when you cannot offer them a measurable improvement in their lives. You can’t pay the electricity bill with hope. You can’t put hope in the petrol tank. Your landlord won’t accept hope by direct debit, and Tesco won’t take hope at the checkout. We’ve gone from politicians promising outcomes to politicians promising feelings. The political offer has been reduced from “we will make your life materially better” to “we will make you feel slightly more optimistic about the possibility that your life might one day become materially better.” We’re in the end game now.
