For over FIVE YEARS, traders in this area have reportedly faced this disturbing situation. Almost every night, around 10:00–10:30 PM, police officers allegedly arrive, arrest traders or their workers, take them to the station, and detain them, even when there is no fight, violence, or disturbance. What makes this situation even more concerning are allegations that traders or their workers are sometimes required to pay ₦5,000 or ₦7,000 before they can be released. Last night, one of my shop assistants was simply bringing pure water into our shop to stock the refrigerator as we prepared to close for the night. Officers arrived, confronted him, and took him away. I was fortunate to be inside the shop at the time. Had I been outside, I could have faced the same situation. We are hardworking Nigerians trying to earn an honest living. We are not criminals, and we deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. We understand that the police have a responsibility to maintain law and order. However, that responsibility must never be used as a reason to intimidate innocent citizens or demand money from people before releasing them.
