Use of first person pronouns is often required to use active voice. Passive voice is not only old-fashioned, it's weak.

It took me a long while to work out that when I’m feeling dissatisfied, it’ usually because one of thes criteria is not being met.
About a year ago, I wrote myself a ‘research philosophy’ and stuck it to my wall.
When research opportunities have come up, I’ve used it to decide whether to go for them or not.
