Shock wave ✍️ It forms when an object moves through air faster than the speed of sound. To understand this, we first need to look at how sound travels. Every moving object pushes air molecules aside and creates tiny pressure ripples that spread out in all directions, similar to the ripples created when a stone is dropped into still water. These ripples always travel at a fixed speed, which is the speed of sound. This happens regardless of how fast the object creating them is moving. When an object moves slowly, it remains behind its own ripples, which spread ahead of it. They gently alert the air in front, allowing it to part and flow smoothly around the object. Everything changes when an object exceeds the speed of sound. Now, the object is moving faster than the pressure ripples it creates. This means it is literally outrunning every signal it sends out. The air directly in front receives no warning that anything is coming because no pressure wave can reach it before the object arrives. This situation creates a shock wave. The diagram illustrates this well with a supersonic jet. As the aircraft moves to the right, it leaves behind a trail of expanding circular pressure waves. Each wave is emitted at a different moment in the past and is centered on where the aircraft was at that moment. The aircraft has long moved ahead of all of them. When you look at all those expanding circles together, they share a common edge; they all just touch two straight diagonal lines that form a pointed cone with the aircraft at the very tip. This cone is the shock wave. It forms because all those pressure waves from every moment of the aircraft's past pile up and arrive at the cone surface at the same time, stacking on top of one another. This creates a sudden jump in air pressure, temperature, and density across a very thin layer. The angle of that cone tells you how fast the aircraft is going. A fast aircraft creates a narrow, needle-like cone, while one that barely goes faster than sound forms a wide, nearly flat cone. This means scientists can determine an aircraft's speed just by photographing its shock wave and measuring the angle, without needing any other information. The Mach number shown in the diagram indicates how many times faster than sound the object is traveling. The higher that number, the sharper and more pointed the cone becomes. The loud sonic boom people hear when a supersonic aircraft flies overhead is a direct result of that cone of compressed air sweeping across the ground. It is not just a single event when the aircraft breaks the sound barrier, but a continuous wave of compressed air that follows the aircraft as long as it remains supersonic. The same physics explain the crack of a bullwhip, which briefly exceeds the speed of sound, the sharp crack of a supersonic bullet, and even thunder itself, which is the shock wave from lightning rapidly heating the surrounding air so explosively that it expands faster than sound can travel.
